I see a lot of crappy browser based games that feature feeding pets to make them grow.  What I'm after is something a little more realistic.  Haven & Hearth has a neat way of doing it, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for.  What I like about H & H's breeding is that animals have some inherited traits.  What I don't like is that it isn't to focus of the game, and the quality of animals is limited by the player's skill in farming.  Pokémon features breeding, but it seems unrealistic to me.

A way to fight the creatures would be kinda cool, too.

Does anyone know of any games like this?  Thanks in advance.

Ye Olde SimLife, where you (try to) prod evolution towards creating an intelligent lifeform.

Black & White, two games I really don't personally appreciate, feature you playing a god with a big monster as your "pet" and you teach it to be a rampaging asshole or a gentle giant.

Many godgames, where the mortals are your pets pretty much - like classic Populous serie.

You get to breed your bulls, through bull on bull action, none of this silly Lamarckian evolutionary theory. On top of that, if you end up paying them real money for some reason, you can implant the embryos along with the semen you buy from other player players who have put them up for sale. And if you want, you can then sell your semen if you think it's prized enough.

That sounds both interesting and a terrible way to spend money. :P

The Dragon Warrior Monsters series has a lot of this. The monsters appear to be sentient, so it quite creeps me out, but there you go.

The Creatures games are really the best you can get, you can get them on GOG, 10 dollars for the first two and 10 for the third.
