Oh... wow... yikes.
« on: April 09, 2011, 09:22:45 am »

Having never used steel serated blades in traps before... I was quite impressed. I know people had said how they turned things to cabbage but this was really quite unexpected.

During a fairly large siege I saw a large group of trolls charing towards my fort, thankfully I had JUST set up a choke point and the bridge was raising so all was good... I looked down to make sure that one goblin elite bowman wasn't killing all my marksdwarves [He was lying in the moat with a stone in the place of his head] and then looked up to check on the trolls.

One of them. Crawling away with a crushed rib cage from a stone fall trap. Well, the others must have run off then hadn't they? I can't see their corpses anywhere... great, those blades are crap. They must have hurt themselves and got scared. Hey, I didn't know traps made with microline were cyan... and what's all this stuff here?

So much blood, and arms, and legs, heads torsos... all over the place. They had gone a fair few yards, even over walls.

I love this game.

I can strongly reccomend just watching them when nothing else is going on. Once in a while a random burst of gore will tell you there used to be a thief nearby...

Imagine a goblin in an active blender. Now imagine the blender in a larger blender. That's a serated steel disk trap.

I've not had any baby snatchers or kobold thieves at all. I had an ambush once, and now about four sieges, all goblins... The sieges are fairly common, I had two in two seasons, but NEVER a thief... aside from the Rhesus Macaque who I think have gone extinct after I got my war dogs...

I decided to let down my gates to let the goblins charge at my fort, then lift it when they were near, but unfortunatly all my war dogs chased out to meet them and got butchered. Rather than rage quit and open task manager [I'd been working on this army of dogs since I started] I decided to wait it out.

So. Much. Blood. Those that didn't die from the traps were wounded, stone drop on their heads so they run away, right into the blades. It was marvelous.

I quit it using task manager, and I'm going to reload it to see it all over again.

You can also modify announcements.txt in the init folder to tell you whenever any creature is injured.

I don't think I'm willing to do that... I DID just watch my traps rip a siege apart and the annoucements would kill me.

Now, make the serrated disks cyan...Dynamite with a laser beam, attached to magma. (Sadly, that's figurative.)

My fort is guarded by 40 weapon traps, each one filled each with two menacing spikes, two serrated disks, two spiked balls, two enormous corkscrews, and two giant axe blades.  Each.  All bronze.

The lucky ones dodge into the cage traps.

I take it you found out that troll blood is cyan?

I need to make more steel blades, I really do. I just need to get enough coke first ^.^

Or... MAGMA.

I just have a single wide U-shaped line of weapon traps, 10 iron serrated discs per trap, and the first drawbridge and moat behind that. Stuff does get through, but otherwise it would be kinda boring. And having a broad line of traps rather than a thin corridor also means that a whole squad will get injured and spasm around, instead of one or two dying and the rest running off.

You don't even need metal for the large serrated discs. In my previous fortress I used green glass discs. Even though glass isn't nearly as strong as metal, you still get that satisfying explosion of blood and limbs flying everywhere. The only problem with weapon traps is that they tend to get jammed.

Yea I only use a single line of serrated disk traps myself.  I don't want to make defense too easy, but it's just so satisfying watching a troll step on a tile and explode that I can't avoid a single line of disk traps.
