The king has arrived with his full entourage.
« on: April 08, 2011, 09:53:09 pm »

I am now a Mountainhome! It's my first time getting the king. I don't have a king place built yet. How long before a noble gets pissed at poor accommodations? It's going to take a reeeeealy nice area to top my duke's digs. I want to smooth it all out and engrave it before he moves in. Luckily I have some bedazzled furniture that was just piling up. Whoah... he has absolutely no preferences whatsoever! What's he going to ask for in mandates?!? Nice, he came with some dang good military. Not as good as my boys overall, but a new legendary marksdwarf, axe dwarf, sword dwarf, and mace dwarf plus a few lesser guys is nothing to sneeze at. Current created wealth: 16,257,656.

Sweet, no new mandates. My duke likes gold, which is easy enough to get, and the current mayor has a fixation on floor hatches.

My king's entourage came half a year ago between two sieges. They decimated the next one in no time, and now I'm just waiting on him.

Fortunately, I have little worries about satisfying the King's needs. One of my dwarves got in a mood and made an Adamantine Coffer worth over 1,000,000 dwarfbucks. Put that in one room and it's set for life.

Lucky. I can never seem to get to a Barony. I get 20 population, 100k created wealth, and 10k exported wealth and I still get nothing!

Make sure the Dwarf Caravan leaves the map before you talk to the Outpost Liason. I get a Barony every time, with that technique.

Based on the few times I HAVE gotten a Baron, I've learned that I DON'T WANT ONE.

You can choose and appoint the Baron yourself now, once you become a Barony. Look over your Dwarves when you start getting close to triggering it, and remember which guy likes Iron Bars and Plump Helmets (instead of Crystal Glass and Roc Eyeballs).

Just remember to find and mark which dwarf you want before talking to the liaison you think will give you the barony. You will not be able to check their preferences when you are on the baron-selection screen. Set their nickname to "Baron" or something easy to remember, so you can select them on the liaison's list with no trouble.

If you don't know which dwarf to pick, don't hit [a] to accept the barony when talking to the liaison who asks about your baron choice; hit [b] to decline it for the time being. You'll get the question again in the same circumstances next year.

From my experience, kings and queens never have any preferences.
