Basically, if something doesn't manage to spike through armour, regardless of what is it - a sword, a spiked ball, anything - then it rolls a second check, which is how much damage will it deal through the armour if it can't bypass it.

And the damage through armour is always blunt, so a huge mass of silver swung at a gobblin is bound to leave a really large bruise.

...seeing as invaders will mostly wear leather with the occasional iron helmet and/or weapon, I'd say even sawblades serrated edge discs made of silver can cut through said leather and cause cabbage.

If you have sand, I recommend green glass cockscrews. Or just put any trap on a 1-tile-wide walkway far above ground and watch as the goblins blow apart out of hitting an obstacle.
