I have the auto-save on for each season, and it saves it as a new file.

Now, lets say you have region1 and region1-sum-1051

Now, if you load region1-sum-1051 (because something /bad/ happened to your dwarves a few days after summer), and autumn starts, the next file created will be called:

region1-sum-1051-aut-1051

The main file (region1) does not get saved into again.
