how do you move goods en masse?
« on: April 08, 2011, 05:34:01 pm »

I have tons of stuff to trade, but limited materials to make bins. When I want them taken to the depot, it is tiring and time consuming to individually select everything that isn't in a bin. Is there some way to mass select an entire category of goods for trading?

Nope - you'll have to pick items one by one, they'll take up loads of space in the stockpile (1 item/tile), and will be brought to the depot one by one too.

On the other side, what do you need wood for aside from bins anyway? Beds and training spears, everything else has better substitutes.

Also all that nickel and zinc and lead can be made into bins

You could "s" search.

I have (2) macros pre-defined... one is a 13x set of <enter><down arrow> for the trade screen and the other is a 17x version.

(these go in your init/macros folder, mine are named Trade-Select-13.mak and Trade-Select-17.mak)

So to use them, I go into the "move goods screen" (the 'g' key on the trade depot), then Ctrl-L to load the 17x version.  Search for what I want moved and hit Ctrl-P to play the macro.  Now I've selected the 17 items on the current search page.

As for hauling - your trade good stockpiles should always be directly next to (or on the Z-levels above/below) the trade depot with easy/fast access via a few stairs.  Even moving 100 items goes fast if the dwarves are only moving stuff 10-20 tiles.

For an easier to record macro, just press ctrl+r, then go down one and press Enter. Then press ctrl+r again, ctrl+s to save (you have to give it a name), then just hold down ctrl+p. Be warned, though: it skips after about 2 pages or so.

Move the depot closer to your workshops, or vice versa.  Or make a quantum stockpile (1-square dump) next to the depot, if you have enough haulers.

I usually concentrate on making a few high-value items to trade instead...  gold goblets, IE.

All the wood I get comes from caravans.

How do you get a ton of wood from caravans? I've never seen them bring more than ten or so logs, one of each type.

I suppose I could use all that sphalerite I got. I got tetrahedrite too, but that's mostly eaten up by the caverns.

mak stone pots so you dont need to make barrels. thats more material for bins right there.

Funny, i do not have such problem. From the dwarves, i always request maximum of all kinds of logs they offer, maximum of all drinks they offer, maximum of barrels they offer (so i do not have to use the wood to make those) and max on lye/pearlash/potash.

This usually results in them bringing 50-60 logs every season, not to mention 10-15+ barrels of drinks, 5-10 empty barrels, 3-6 barrels of lye. Nah, rarely have a tree problem myself.

I do find the hippies to be the funniest. The monopolistic bastards. First they come and tell me not to cut too many trees, then i check their wares and notice that they have 100+ logs for sale :P I guess everyone wants to protect his/her corner of the market :P

As for moving stuff en masse, lots of haulers. Thats the only solution.

Precisely. Zinc bins, nickel bins, lead bins even... I can't remember a situation of me not having galena.

And it's training for your blacksmiths, too!

mak stone pots so you dont need to make barrels. thats more material for bins right there.

This too. Wood is only for bins and beds, possibly training weapons, aside from that, there are better options for other stuff.

You could just make metal bins instead, that's what I do with cheap metal.
