candy caps are clothing?!
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:52:23 pm »

Just tried to make one, and it said it needed adamantine cloth. I'll be damned if I'm wasting the stuff on materials that will wear out. Guess I'll have to give her a steel cap instead.

Yup. What did you expect "metal clothing" to mean?

Caps are special, since they can be made of both soft (i.e. cloth and leather) and hard (i.e. metal) materials - since adamantine can be used to make both soft and hard items, it seems to default to treating them as soft.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That's what caught me off guard, as it was being made at the forge instead of the clothier shop.

Can you not make adamantine helms?

Adamantine helms are no problem, but it's caps that are considered either clothing or armor depending on material. Any type of cloth or leather is clothing. Bone and metal bars are armor, and thus won't degrade. Wood I'm not sure, but since it goes in the finished goods pile, I'd guess it's probably clothing as well (despite being stronger than leather).

So make helms instead? I'm not exactly sure I understand the problem. :P

It's not a problem, really, more of an observation that people might find useful.

A dwarf can wear one helm AND two caps at the same time if you layer it right. Therefore it's beneficial to create both metal helms and caps for maximum protection -- doubly important because we're covering the head here. If you're really crazy you can add 6 leather hoods on top of that too, although the gain is marginal for that.

I once noticed one of my dwarves was wearing a silk cap, a leather helm, and a yarn hood.

It was actually kinda bad ass imagining it, the silk for comfort, the leather for protection and the hood to cover from rain...

For the game to take into account adamantine's material properties, I guess.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
