Helmet Snake Farm?
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:57:46 am »

Hi guys. I feel like raising a brood of helmet snakes to get put on chains outside of my fort. I hear their poison is particularly potent.

I've tried a few embarks, and I haven't found any helmet snakes down in any of the caverns. Do any of you have any more experience with this than I do? For example, do helmet snakes show up more often in particular biomes?

Edit: the raws say [BIOME:SUBTERRANEAN_CHASM]. Since we don't have chasms anymore I presume this refers to something else.

I certainly want to observe this thread.

I can imagine the goblins now...

Refers simply to the caverns AFAIK, there should also be something about depth, too, so only 3rd layer or 2nd and 3rd or...?

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

I can see it now:

In the entrance of Snake Paradise Of Large Snakes, there are many many helmet snakes that patrol the path.  They are quite venomous and long.  And, when you walk past them to the front gate, a large engraving catch's your eye.  It has a picture of the mayor on it, and it reads "If you think those helmet snakes are long, you should see ours!"

[UNDERGROUND_DEPTH:1:2]

A bit cryptic. Any idea what that means? Can live in first AND second layer?

I'm pretty sure this means that they are found in the first and second cavern layers.  They also have CLUSTER_NUMBER:1:1, which means that you only see one at a time, POPULATION_NUMBER:10:25 which means your local biome will start with 10-25 of them, and FREQUENCY:30, which appears to mean that you'll only have them in your local biome 30% of the time.  Also, MAXAGE:40:60, so you don't need to worry about them dying of old age before they can breed.

Of course, most caverns won't have every kind of cavern critter living in it.

Frequency determines how often they spawn, not the chance of being in your local population. According to the wiki, anyway, which could be wrong.

Helmet snakes are quite rare. If you want more, increase POPULATION_NUMBER and CLUSTER_NUMBER in the raws. Enjoy helmet snake conga lines of death.

Personally I play only with one cavern layer.  I get loads of crundles and COMPLETELY USELESS POND GRABBERS and shit. Barely any useful animal. Naked mole dogs would be good if their lives didn't ended so quickly. Sometimes a GCS, cave crocodile or a cave dragon.

Of course, most caverns won't have every kind of cavern critter living in it.

You sure about this ? The biome alignment tags don't work for subterranean creatures. I've got many various cavern critters.

No, if you want more, give them [BIOME:NOT_FREEZING]. And those other stuff, I guess. And turning the frequency up to 100 should help.

Can't you embark with their eggs?

Or are embark-brought eggs infertile?

I dunno.

Wait, I just remembered the perfect creature tag. It was added a few versions back. From the file changes file:

Quote
[UBIQUITOUS] -- creature will occur in absolutely every region that is a biome match (does not apply to evil/good)

Slap that token on Helmet Snakes. BAM, snakes everywhere.

I upped FREQUENCE, CLUSTER_NUMBER and POPULATION_NUMBER by an order of magnitude, and also made caves super-common so I could check easily. So far I've found them in 3/3 locations I've checked, and also in huge numbers (10+ on the units screen immediately after embark).

I'll give it a shot with [UBIQUITOUS] and see where that gets me.
