Change Your Clothes, Ya Bum
« on: November 21, 2007, 07:19:00 pm »

I have a mature fortress, working out quite nicely. In fact, I am doing so well that I only have a couple problems. One is the issue that the Dwarven Economy always brings (and I can't retroactively turn it off, it appears), and the other, which is the subject of this post.

The main source of unhappiness for my dwarves are the clothes rotting off of their back!

This is despite my having plenty of crafted clothing to wear. They only get new clothes when the stuff they have rots, despite me even trying to force a dump of the objects through the Stock menu. Is it a side effect of the economy (Not enough money to buy clothes?!), or what?

The primary problem with worn clothing is that they grab new clothing but just wear it on top of their old worn stuff, which generally results in their having several layers of clothing in various states of decay (eventually rotting off entirely). Lately I've noticed dwarves being slightly better about taking off clothing that starts getting worn, although they seem to still be clueless about taking off old clothes in advanced decay (that is, they seem to be fairly good at discarding xWornx clothes but they'll happily keep their XXTatteredXX clothing on under their newer duds). If they are not picking up new clothing at all, then that means that there's no affordable clothing available.

(I think that once the economy starts they can't get clothes for themselves unless they're actually put up for sale in a shop, too. I've heard conflicting testimony on this, though).

Will they pick up new clothes if the economy is off?

They never did for me.

This is an old problem from before the recent updates. I'm sure it's on the to-do list somewhere  :)

I just never make new clothing. Once they get through the withdrawal symptoms, they'll be fine. If you try to make clothing, it just gets worse.

Maybe all the microorganisms have made the clothes grow into and becoming part of the skin? Can't rip your own skin off ya know... Mmmm...

I'm in the same boat.  :)
My dwarves are happy in their nekkidness, running free and wild.
