Cities! More similarities between two great "Df" games.
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:58:56 pm »

I am really hyped about this feature. Finally adventure mode towns won't look like a bunch of tetris blocks slapped together,

Spoiler: Townmap (click to show/hide)

You know what? It totally reminds me of Daggerfall. The towns are less square-ish, because DF is awesome as it is (and Daggerfall had a pretty basic map generator, still great for that time though), but I expect lots of shops/houses/workshops with random names and random placement, so it would look totally like Daggerfall FX+. And you know, it's awesome. I thought Daggerfall is the last RPG game I see with pretty randomly generated towns :P.

Now I just need guards near those guard gates yelling "Halt!" ;D

Tangential comment: I really like the sample town maps toady released. They remind me of mandalas.

Ever since the current dev page (the whole one, not the part with the next few releases) was put up, I've been of the opinion that when it's done DF is going to strongly resemble an ASCII Elder Scrolls game.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

It would rather be a timeline-challenged ES precursor. As ES games have become less and less complex in gameplay with each release, DF would, to fit into the series, have to be set before Arena.

I do look forward to them, even though I'm more of a fortress player myself, it should be interesting and it's another step forward after all!

Honestly, I think Morrowind is far more complex than Daggerfall. Sure, Daggerfall has a playable area the size of Great Britain, with thousands of towns and hundreds of thousands of NPCs... but they're all the same. Each town you visit is just the last town but shuffled around a bit. NPCs all act the same, only receiving different personalities based on profession (of which there are only a few).

Meanwhile, you could fit the entirety of the Morrowind map inside the Daggerfall map hundreds of times, and there are just over 1,000 NPCs total in the game. But each and every town, village, camp, city and fortress you come across feels unique, and in fact has its own backstory and reason for existence. All the NPCs have a name, and may have different things to say about anything you ask them based on class, location, race, and gender. Every object in every location in the game can be moved around, and every encounter feels like you're interacting with a real world rather than a mess of randomly copy-pasted terrain features and buildings.

Wait, what were we talking about again?

I don't know but all I'm thinking of is how long it would take you to kill them all...

We were TALKING about procedurally generated cities reminding us of an old gem of a procedurally generated game.

Nobody mentioned Morrowind.  It was a good game, and well crafted, but not procedural.  At all.  So kind of a non-sequitur there, Gat.

Yeah I believe I've mentioned my want to take the "Thieves highway" in those towns, haven't I? Sneaking into second story windows as a Khajiit and robbing people blind while they sleep below, blissfully unawares of my egress into their domicile.  Hopping from rooftop to rooftop again to get to my favorite little furniture shop... or is it? No, it's a thieves' guild, and I've just made the score of the century.

Sigh

Wait, what were we talking about?

Yes, it was. But the advantage Dwarf Fortress has over Daggerfall is that it's detailed. It's as massive as Daggerfall, but all the towns and people and such feel unique, rather than like clones of each other. It makes you feel like your actions have weight.

I'd say that, at this point, Dwarf Fortress is at about the same level as Daggerfall was.  Quests are completely generic "Go here, kill this" type quests.  Cities are just boxes with people in them, doing nothing of consequence.  Wars are mentioned but never fought where you can see them (in Adventurer mode anyways).

But the biggest difference is that Dwarf Fortress has plans to be so much more than that.  I really can't wait for some of the things Toady has mentioned to become in-game elements.

;D Hey now somebody has to write a little script that turns a df world into a world which can be explored within the elderscrolls XD. Hehe i bet the visualizers we have will be like that at some point.

It would be interesting if you could witness the wars in adventure mode, join in... or something better, what if you lead the charge?

Oh god, It's Mount and Blade.

I guess there is a complicated way to do it: Look up the list of combatants in Legends mode, visit the spot where the battle took place in Adventure mode, and recreate it in the Arena.
