[176.38b] Owned clothes sit in one place forever.
« on: February 25, 2008, 12:36:00 pm »

My fortress has many articles of clothing in various states of wear, from perfectly good to downright tattered lying all over the place. Their owners just seemingly discard them for no reason and then never return to pick them up. They cannot be dumped, stockpiled, stored in cabinets or coffers, or in general moved in any way.

Alive or dead, their owners just don't seem interested in them anymore, and I can't find a way to get rid of them, and they are beginning to pile up all over the place. Is there a way to force owners to at least dump them in the garbage pile?

Ditto.

Especially annoying when one is sitting in the door.  That leads into your fortress.

Yeah, this is the reason I stopped making clothes.

If they own a room, then they SHOULD store them there.  And if they own a cabinet in their room, they SHOULD put them in the cabinet.

Yeah that's what I don't understand, all of my dwarves have rooms and cabinets ... some of the stuff belongs to pretty prominent members of the community with multiple cabinets, and yet it just sits there.

The problem with giving dwarves rooms, cabinets, and chests is they'll continue to collect items until every available space in those rooms will be filled. For example, 3 empty spaces, 2 chests, 2 cabinets, means the dwarf will collect at least 3+2x10+2x10, or 43 items. FURTHER, they will gather new items to fill those spaces over and above picking up old items scattered around the fort.

For a long while now I wanted a solution to the littering problem. For one, dwarves should only keep the best condition items they have instead of gathering 100 plain rock scepters because you gave them 10 chests to store them in (quality over quantity). For the other, any item not worn by the dwarf or not properly stored in a container in a room owned by the dwarf should be un-owned, the dwarf didn't care enough about the item and abandoned it).

If the dwarf is discarding the clothing because it is tattered (not always the case), then their ownership of it should be removed. Doubly so if they have no intention of ever picking it up again.

There's a pair of socks outside my fortress that has been sitting there for years, and nobody will move it because it is still technically owned.

It's pretty labor intensive, but there's a workaround for at least the trouble spots -- eg. the huge pile of discarded but still owned items at the magma forge or the armor stockpile. Here's a trick I learned from someone somewhere on these forums....

For the armor stockpile:
1. Set up a smashing bridge (in the correct position) one z-level below the offending items, with the bridge linked and the lever pulled, bringing the bridge into the upright position.
2. Remove the armor stockpile from the square with the clutter that you wish to be free of and make sure that anything you want to keep has been moved elsewhere.
3. Channel out the floor square under the clutter, causing the items to fall into the crush area of the raised bridge.
4. Make certain that no dwarves or valuables will be crushed. (Or skip this stage, if you like surprises.)
5. Pull the lever, lowering the bridge and smashing all the clutter into nothing.
6. Dismantle the bridge, rewall the floor, and repeat the procedure at the next trouble stop.

It's a lot of work, but it's also sorta fun in a perverse way.

For the magma forge, it should be easier. I haven't tried, but I think this should work: Dismantle the forge and make sure the anvil's been stored away safely or is already out of the way, then simply channel out the floor under the offending items. They'll fall into magma and be burned.
