Megaproject Idea + Question
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:56:19 pm »

my megaproject idea first    http://img855.imageshack.us/f/cityt.png/

And the question is, can you still build down from the sky ceiling? I did a couple of searches but couldn't find any posts about it.

Yes, you can. Downward stairs can be built going downwards, thus allowing you to build downwards. This didn't exist in 40d.

EDIT: added a little more info.

Back in .16 I performed some !!Science!! involving DFliquids, Obsidian Casting, & what I believe you mean by the "Sky Ceiling", unfortunately it turned out that whilst you can cast Obisdian on the highest level of sky (with dfliquids, I can't think of any other way to get it up there, since I believe pumps only pressurize to the height they're at), removing the supporting connection to the ground did cause it to collapse/cave-in.

Not that I am aware. But like I said, you can build down stairs from above.

Whew, I'm pretty happy about that TGL, I was worried it might have changed or something.

Yeah JAFANZ, I'm not worried about building a ceiling or anything, I just want to hang the bubbles in the megaproject from the sky, I could always use no cave-ins to make them float, but if possible I would rather be able to hang them from the sky.

Magical sky support doesn't propagate horizontally (you can easily test this by placing obsidian walls in the arena), so unfortunately, you'll have to build your own ceiling to do this.

That was my understanding as well.

I have recently seen claims that a setup with a chain of two supports (each with a floor below them) hung from the sky would leave a floor tile at the bottom of that chain which one could suspend constructions from.  I'm not sure if that's actually been tested or not, though, so experiment first.

You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Yep, just tested, that would be how it's done. Kinda cool actually, since they're just hanging there with no support at all.

EDIT- Never mind, as soon as I removed the next Up/Down Stair the construction I had built collapsed, mistake on my part, guess I will build my own ceiling...

Which...only pressurize to the height of the top pump.

If it's a problem, then you haven't build tall enough.

Constructed Up/Down stairs will support things. I have a hole I punched into the aquifer layers, that hangs in space because I didn't collapse both levels properly. It's currently filling my moat. Via two sets of three pumps.
