How the Hell do I smelt Tetrahedite?
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:25:13 pm »

I've got the wood burner built, burned some word and have the smelter built. I just have charcoal though. I disabled Tetrahedite as an economic stone, so I should be able to smelt it, right? I can't! All the options on the smelter are disabled.
This is actually the only time I feel completely lost. I know I've managed to do it a few days ago but I can't remember how. The wiki didn't help at all. I understand it (I think), but do I need a magma forge and have to find the Magma Sea or can I do it with standard word and a normal smelter + charcoal?

Make sure the ore is near the smelter and not forbidden.

If it's close and not forbidden... then I'm not sure.

I made a new smelter, on blocks of the damn stone, still no luck. There are no other stones. The proper labours are active, I have the charcoal. The stones aren't forbidden.

Okay, it's working. Problem was, the charcoal is apparently vanishing.

Other than smelting, where would the charcoal of been used up? As in by the dwarves, not because I wanted them to use it.

Pig iron and steel making, making some constructions and hauling make items "busy" and can't be used by another task even if the things weren't built/made yet.

Actually, I think smelting is considered an "economic" use of ores - basically, treating them as raw materials instead of mason fodder.

Also, charcoal may have been used up in glassmaking or in any sort of metalworking at a forge, so if you've done any of that and you haven't set up the relevant sorts of magma workshops, well, that does use up fuel.

also clay-firing could be the culprit

I wasn't actually doing anything with it. It was odd. For a few minutes I saw them bring the coal to the stockpile and it'd vanish. It's fine now, though. Thanks.

You can use charcoal to make vertical bars for some reason.

You can use soap to make workshops, walls, floors.. lots of things.

ive noticed with my block stockpiles as well, that every so often a bunch of dwarves will come take all the bars they can hold, try to put them in another stockpile, then bring them back when they realize its the wrong place

Just so you know, you do NOT have to remove tetrahedrite from the list of economic stones to smelt it.  In fact, you shouldn't do that at all, unless you want people making doors and tables out of it in addition to smelting it.

Marking it as economic reserves it for smelting.  Marking it as non-economic means they can waste it.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Glassmaking using charcoal I think. And most forging (weapons, armor).

Your charcoal most likely is now the material one of your workshops or constructed walls/floors is made of. You could check "z - stocks - scrollscrollscroll - "bars" - charcoal - expand view" and look at each of your pieces of charcoal.

Also,

"I made a new smelter, on blocks of the damn stone, still no luck. There are no other stones. The proper labours are active, I have the charcoal. The stones aren't forbidden."

Did you bring tetrahedrite blocks instead of raw tetrahedrite rocks? Blocks of ore can't be used for anything except construction of walls and workshops. Only raw ore rocks can be smelted.

Sorry, I called it blocks. I meant rocks (as in when you mine the wall and the rocks are left).

It only happened for a few minutes. It hasn't happened again. I suppose it was just a random error or something.
