Okay, image hosting changed and original post deleted.

Diary in an unknown hand:

9th Galena
That is it! I have had ENOUGH of all this STUFF lying strewn about this sieve that everyone likes to call a fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't think there should be fortress access there. I'm in charge now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Why are those things where they are? Why is there a farm of doom in the deepest cavern? I am assured that it is paradise compared to what it was only a few years back, but that's hardly comfort to me, is it? What if we get attacked? Our military numbers less than ten and has little experience, and half of them aren't even in full uniform.

So diary, here's the plan:

1. EVERYBODY not in a squad is to get the topside building project completed right away. If they're going to be lugging it up to the surface they might as well do something with it. If all goes well I will be making a few changes here and there.
2. The military is to be streamlined. Current orders are for ten of nine dwarves to be training, which is impractical. I am told we have one of those new-fangled "danger room" thingies. Bah, there's no substitute for live training. What are our cage traps for?
3. Our best armourer is not taking armouring jobs, for some reason. I slapped him upside the head and told everyone else to stay the hell away from the forges when there are mail shirts to be made. We don't have one useable one in the whole place. But at least they have socks? One of them has a hammer too.
4. There is steel in the world. We do not have any of it. As iron is a poor material for the great edges of axes we will be digging for adamantine. Maybe.
5. STOP THE CHISELS we have more dwarves than booze aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

18th Galena

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I receive report that a farmer has cancelled complaining about plump helmet spawn in favour of getting caged and bleeding to death just inside the inner bridge. There is nothing in the combat log. It is very strange. Also a child was attacked by a skyeti I guess as I was clearing body parts. The military have been dispatched.

19th Galena

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

HOLY CRAP somebody's feet are spraying blood outside the front gate! Everybody off the surface!

21st Galena
All I wanted to do was tidy up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

23rd Galena
Apparently an order for a captain of the guard to be appointed was mixed in with the squad reshuffling. We have no chains for a jail. This explains so much. I will order some chains directly. We have had a change of manager recently.

We will be needing those chains, I think. But first, everybody is in a squad with socks. Sweet, lifesaving socks. The children are on their own.

Yeah, most of the stuff left over from the reclaim is covered with frozen forgotten beast extract. There was a reason it was still sitting around. I got started on cleaning up the surface and caverns, but it required individually checking each item to see if it was gooey.

Time for a clean-up program. Build floors, dorf-baths, etc.

More like mist generators. The mood status is insane. At this rate, 0 work will get done.

Doop de doop, watching stuff die. It's still Limestone, the spiral has progressed to the insanity stage, and I can't find any wood for a mist generator. I'm starting to wish I'd quietly restarted as soon as the deaths started happening, if only because I spend so much time directing dwarves to do things.

I took a look at the year 5 save and didn't see a fully equipped Hospital - there was a hospital zone and some bags in it, but no beds, no tables, no traction benches.  If that still hasn't been handled, it might help a lot if you have some decent medical dwarves left alive - or even if you don't - some of them are bound to be at least novices in the medical skills.  The hospital zone was probably rather small for what I'm envisioning you might be seeing right now though, lol.  You might need to use a bigger space, from what I'm hearing, lol.

Also - kill every animal in the fort - excapt pets - lock pets in a room and forbid the door till they are all dead, then let the dwarves bury them.  Pets track contaminants all over.

In worst case scenario - Last thing I'd suggest - take your happiest healthy dwarf (if you have any healthy ones) and create a really big lavish meal food and drink stockpile, and a 1 tile weapon stockpile with only picks enabled.  get some nice furniture made, and load his room with it, and grab some statues as well.  Then lock him in and bar the door.  Let him mine out a nice big one-level area, then set him to smoothing and engraving.

Inspect everything that dwarves carry down the hall to his room as you stock it, and dump anything that has beast goo on it.

Try to make sure said dwarf is not married.  If they are married - and the spouse is healthy, drag the spouse in too.

Be prepared to make lots of memorials too, lol.

*Giggles hysterically* Hehehehe, it's always been doomed since the first step!

If we'll take next reclaim, we should definitely make sealed sub-fortress with a few dorfs locked there.

The contaminant killed so quickly that it didn't get a chance to work its way back into the fortress, although the dipper I put down caught a couple of piles of extract. After the initial deaths it was just a standard spiral, with dwarves killing each other so efficiently that the lack of hospital didn't really matter. Right now there are 65 live adult bodies, and I estimate there'll be about 60 once the stragglers die. Just got to scrape it all together into a narrative now. What an eventful four months.

I love this game!

Farmerbob, you're in!

This is now the second tantrum spiral this fort has lived through.

A note on the walls, I was planning on having an X shaped patrol route, from the NW tower, to the inside, through an ammo stockpile, and to the SE tower. Same with the NE to SW towers. These were going to be for the marksdwarves that I never got trained.

The 3x3 bunkers should have a one tile fortification carved into them, and a catapult or balista placed inside. We have a master siege engineer, might as well use him.

The top top towers should have Fortifications built out from the walls, so:

FFFFFFFFFF
FWWWWWF
FWoooooWF
FWoooooWF
FWWWWWF
FFFFFFFFFF

F: Fortification
W: Wall, one level lower
o: Floor

I wanted to run magma into the moat, but we would have to built constructed floors, and walls in order to not melt all the ice. Though, flooding the surface with Magma might be a good way to get rid of the beast extract.

Must be good for the frame rate, and no worries, we have plenty of coffins.

13th Limestone
First insane dwarf. A farmer called Melbil started howling in his room, but luckily someone was able to bolt the door before he got the idea to run out.

15th Limestone
A gem cutter laughs in the mounting chaos. It is not a happy laugh.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Huh. Well, that solves one of our problems at least. I don't think Athel will be able to make much of that one...

19th Limestone
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another day, another madman screaming in his room.

15th Sandstone
In the midst of life we are in death.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That is the way the saying goes, right?

16th Sandstone
Oh now what?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also hear that the thing is so fat that it catches itself on the blood thorns, which sizzle and smoke. I'll make a note of that.

26th Limestone

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
SHUT THE FUCK UP I DON'T CARE

21st Timber
Finally there are fewer than 20 miserable dwarves in the fortress (17), and I don't know how many of them are crazy. Everybody has been too busy to bring food and drink to the prisoners (one death so far), but apparently they're not too busy to lug whole barrels of food and drink about the place. Damn it. We have traders in now, so hopefully we'll be able to offload enough old socks (well not socks, we'll be needing those) to buy food and drink. We may have fewer mouths to feed, but there are still 85 live bodies in the place.

In more cheering news, the pumps for the mist generator are active and the only thing that remains is to give them something to pump.

26th Timber
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Status: whatever. The food and drink supplies are holding up despite the constant brawling in the corridors. Looks like the brewers and cooks have been dodging all the violence.

28th Timber
Zaneg the tanner has gone berserk!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He was within arm's reach of three of the military and was promptly cut into five.

6th Moonstone
Another dwarf tries to finish what Zaneg started, living up to the noble name of berserker.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He lived up to the noble name of his profession, I'll give him that.

15th Moonstone
First mist appearing. 7 dwarves are miserable, 3 are very unhappy, 3 are unhappy, 6 are fine, 29 are content, 12 are happy, and 10 are ecstatic. A blacksmith is crouching in the butcher's shop muttering about 'things'. I order one of the stray pets to be butchered in the hope that it will yield something of use. The dogs are currently too valuble to be slaughtered.

As I stroll through the main catacomb, stepping over the new coffins spilling into the corridors, I notice that despite the chaos the whole area looks a lot... tidier. I am told that upon being asked what to do with the dozens of idlers, I answered 'chisels'. Quite emphatically. This was taken as a sign that everybody should use their idle hands on engraving and not on each other. I don't remember that. The only part I don't remember of my unofficial overseership was the part where I sat rocking in a corner for a week. I guess I'll take credit for it anyway.

22nd Moonstone
The worst is over. After some enforced mist therapy, much of the population is functioning. The records show that there are still two beatings to be handed out, but as our entirely civilian guard captain crazed and died as Likot Bernelas Cenatholon Balad I think I will defer punishment until I am absolutely sure that the guard will use the training spears I assigned them.

Our hospital facilities are... well, I can't find them. The only well in the place draws from mud, and the few wounded lie in the barracks. There is a hospital sign scrawled on a wall that overlooked blank floor. This floor is now the prison area. I will send someone to wipe the sigil.

In terms of skills, we are at least able to provide support for the military. We have a weaponsmith, and our best armourer Iggy has survived untroubled. Our best weaponsmith went insane a short time ago and was cut down without ceremony. Dumed Monomnazom is a dwarf to watch. He is responsible for no less than four dwarven deaths these five months and is still sane.
