I'm here and downloading. First report will be up in a day or so.

EDIT: I'm installing Phoebus so it's easier to see what's going on. When my turn is over I'll install the default graphics back in.

Late Hematite, 106

Safety! Sort of. Never thought I'd get here after th't wrong turn near the Dunes of Hysteric Laughter.  The sketi (skeletal yeti - this place has so many ther's a special name for 'm) nearly got me, but nearly never forged weapons, as me mam used to say.

The bad news is that all Scrubbecreams' paperw'rk is in this terrible handwriting. I'll spend some time mak'n things legible.

The number 'f idlers is terrible, the bedrooms are terrible...you c'n list all the ush'ul complaints. 'M exhaust'd fr'm all th' runn'n and scream'n, 'm goin to bed. 'F I c'n f'nd one.

Late Hematite, 1064

Sleep!  On the cold, hard ground in a fortress open to th' caverns, but I fin'lly got some sleep.

The forges are - curse these maps, can't read th'm right - well, the forges are deep underground at any rate, and near some unfinished floors of bedrooms. Nice enough, except for the missing beds. I like my comforts, so that's going to the top of the list. Beds for everyone, and everyone in a bed, and cabinets and other furniture.

'Nother thing - there's only two stairways connecting upper and lower Scrubbedcreams, and n'ither of them's wide enough to be a fort's main sta'r.  I'm widening one of them.

There's a ton of odd stuff lying about from the first platoon 'f loonies who dug here, including barrels and wood. Som' 'f them are covered in frozen goop, leftovers from an ancient creature or something. I'll send scouting parties to figure out which of the things are safe to touch so we can haul them inside and start using th'm.

There's a tone of stone lying around, so the masons w'll be working fulltime on bedroom furniture. There's also a large hollow sphere near the top 'f the fort. Perfect for an impressive dining room, the floor's even made of magnetite! That'll get these sad faces smiling!  I'm ordering more table and chairs as well as the cabinets and coffers. Some dwarves'll get bags instead of stone coffers, we've got too many of the pesky things. Bags, that is, though dwarves are pesky too.

Th' forges seem to be turning out serrated discs at a good rate. Weapon traps it is! I'll install them on the surface first, and make my way down to the caverns as I can.  We've got a lot of useless metal lying around, th't can be turned into bins with no harm 'nd a lot of good! Clearing space in some of these stockpiles is just what the overseer ordered.

The caverns keep bother'ng me. There's no way to wall them all off properly. Traps might be enough to deal with the usual nuisances, but we've already had one forgotten monstrocity come to this fort. This'll take further thought.

Malachite, 1064

Ah, better.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
'S you c'n see, I finally got the maps copied over into m' fav'rite handwriting. Anyways, we've made a good start on getting this ditch dug-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

CARP.

[The page trails off into messy ink stains.]

Well, pull my beard and call me a baby.  'T was j'st some leftovers fr'm somewheres, I d'nno why the tree-headed twit couldn't avoid a huge stupid web.  There's a whole level practically full of the great gloopy things if I can find a loom I'll tell some weavers off to collect th'm.

'T might h've been one 'f the new clods th't turned up sudden-like. D'nno why they came, ev'n they complained about the danger. What'd they think would happen on a glacier covered in yeti? I m'de a mistake, you know, the yeti aren't all skeletal.  How w's I supp'sed to know? I was too busy fleeing to see 'f they had hair!

'Pparently some spirit was hang'ng around despite all the slabs and whatnot that's been built.  'T decided it wanted a body so bad it took someone else's!  That w's about two weeks ago now, and I'm still steamed about all this stuff being taken
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

t' build a worthless rock salt trinket! Mostly unhappy 'bout the wood, of course.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Th' only other news is that the locals seem happy about my bed-building focus.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Parties everywhere! I'll have to see about getting more industry up and running, try to make enough work for all these idle, unwashed beard hangings.

RL has kind of risen up and swallowed me whole. I've played through the year (the next player will be starting in Granite), but I would like to be able to take an extra day or two to get the posts written if that's ok?

Sandstone, 1064

Th' caverns proved dang'rous, just like I feared. Some wild creat're showed up and took bites out of two dwarves.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The dwarves didn't make it, but the milit'ry took the creat're out just fine, so all's well that ends with retrieving the bodies.

I'm pulling back from the caverns. We don't need them now that the farms are running smoothly.

A little beard hang'ing got brought into the world. A boy. His mother went around tell'ng everyone she could f'nd about it, and that was a lot of people. The screaming trinket had the good luck to be born when a fort-wide celebration was going on.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

S'me people complained of weird noises when they were trying to sleep - s'ppose it's one 'f the cavern creat're's victims. I'll see about getting a slab carved so the spirit can feel at home again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With all the clods safely inside and the rooms expansion well underway, a lot 'f dwarves decided to start having some fun. Parties all over the place!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More metalworking o'ght to stop th't. We need t' start forg'ng some bins, even 'f we have to use all the non-weapons metal in the fort! We've got plenty 'f ore, and the miners ar' gett'ng bored.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just a few days ago, some more clods arrived - right on top of a 'nfestation of yeti. Well, they knew this place wasn't an elfwalk when they decided to come here.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One 'f the clods got struck by a strange fancy right when he arrived. Well, he's too far away for us to hear what he's scream'ng, and even if we could it's probably j'st 'Yeti! Yeti!'.   Me and the heads of the mining and smelting teams gathered on the trade depot and had a grand time watching it all. He isn't dead yet, though.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh, and I really need to remember t' get that slab ordered. The fish clean'r's stinking up our main staircase.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Trader's h've just arrived, so I won't be writing in h're for a while. I'm going to get all the wood and food they h've, and see how many pieces 'f clutter they're will'ng to take away.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So, when I said two more days, I really meant 3 or 4. I'll be making one more post either tomorrow or the day after that will finish off my year.

Early Granite, 1065

Some fool left open holes t' a cavern full 'f water!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

D'nno who. It's floored over now, and a bath took care 'f any poisons it might h've spread around. I think.  I'm still angry about that, even though it's months later.

In better news, remember that woodcutter clod wh' got struck by a strange fancy just as he got within sight of our towers? Turned out the yeti didn't eat h'm after all. When we opened the gates to let the traders in, he came too!  Made someth'ng out 'f wood, the fool, but the months of him flee'ng the yeti were so entertaining I let it slide.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We ran out 'f plump helmet spawn sometime in early winter. Th' farmers are really upset about it:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They keep yelling at everyone they meet abo't how they don't h've any plump helmet spawn. I'll h've to find some way to calm them down.

Someone caught sight 'f another ancient monstrocity down in the caverns. I j'st pulled everyone inside and sealed the gates.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rest 'f the year was fairly quiet, until just a few days ago when a wrestler wrose from the dead. Didn't know any h'd died. I've ordered a hospital on the level w'th the clothiers shops, near the barracks. Hopefully this'll prevent problems in the future.

The year is up, and the other overseer'll be arriving any day now. IGo'dbye Scrubbedcreams!

And the year is done! The save is at: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4342

Ignatz hasn't posted since the 4th. Shall I send a message, or has someone done that already?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Sorry, real life came along and kept me more then occupied for over a month. I had an un-planned job switch. But I'm back for the moment, what shape is the save in?

Oh...

I guess I'm up, I'll get my year done in the next day or two then we can continue. I'm thinking we need a moat, of magma, to keep warm.

I thought so, plus I'm going to try my Forgotten Beast trap idea. If it works, we no longer have to worry about FBs. If it fails... many dead, and much lamenting. Dwarfy either way!

Diary of IggyMcNatz, ex-Oversser of ScrubbedCreams

It's truly been three years, it seems longer. The cold seeps into your bones, makes dwarfs do strange things to stay warm. Ghills, a fine dwarf indeed has stepped down from the post of Overseer, we found his replacement dead in the snow a few leagues from the fortress. In the weeks that followed nobody cared enough to take up the mantle and move on.

So I will.

I have wandered these halls for the past three years and have watched the chaos give way to order. Mistakes that were made in my earlier reign were corrected, saving many lives. We have food, and drink, and a few beds.

Our troubles are still many, we have beasts aplenty, and the cold, that damnable cold that seeps into your bones... we need heat, warmth, magma.

I have devised a series of traps, cages really, in which to trap the forgotten beasts that terrorize our halls. With the beasts hopefully contained we will move to secure the caverns, and Old Scrubbedcreams.

With the beasts contained I will move to heat this frozen hell, with magma! A moat, a great ring of flame surrounding our home. A bastion, protection, and with it, safety. The surface will be ours, the depths will be ours, or we will die in the attempt.
