Journal of Scrubbedcreams, Last Dwarven Outpost

I met with Thob today; he's tired of being the overseer, and wants to go back to mining.  He asked me to take over, since I appear to be the only one not caught completely in the grip of despair.

He's wrong, but I won't argue.  He's done more than his share to keep us alive, he deserves to relax, as much as one can here, after his years of thankless work.

He told me his concerns about the caravan, and I nodded and sent him on his way with a pat on the shoulder.  The caravan will never come, I am sure of it.  The last dwarf that held a rightful claim to the throne died years ago, and I was from the last outpost of survivors that had the courage to try and keep what remained of our race connected.  No one remembers why the elves began their monstrous war, all we know is that we fought to stop them, and failed.  Scrubbedcreams was our desperate hope for a home safe from their savagery.  We failed, at first.

The fortress fell, and many died coming to it.  Finally, Thob managed to lead a wretched band here and dig in, and hold out.  There's a few dozen of us now, but there can't be many dwarves left in the entire world, certainly no more settlements left alone by the elves for a caravan.  Hell, the elves found this blasted pit in the glacier, didn't they?  I imagine more stragglers will come, the few that don't die of frostbite will get whatever welcome we can manage.  It's a sad home for us dwarves, but maybe we can make it work, if we can just get through this rough patch.

Gods, its a wretched place though.  Monstrosities long forgotten battle in the lost levels of the fort, slaying who-knows-what in the dark caverns.  I'm planning something ambitious, though.  We have to dig for magma, it's the only hope.  There's iron ore, and copper and tin, we could forge weapons and more if we could just get to the magma.  It's a fool's hope, but we're dead without it.  We cannot retake the surface or the caverns without weapons, we cannot get weapons without smelted ore, and we cannot smelt ore without heat.  We have no wood, and whatever wood we could scrape together is too precious to burn in a forge.  There is only one answer.  Magma.  We will dig to the sea, if it stretches this far north, and we will build there a new work level, and begin anew.

Food; we need food and drink.  I''ll reorganize everyone into more efficient labor groups as best I can.  We need a better dining hall, something to try and improve our spirits.  If morale doesn't improve, we'll be crushed under the weight of our own misery.  That's my next plan; while the miners dig carefully downward, we will work to make this place liveable, and to keep our bellies full and our throats wet.  Coffins too; the dead must be put to rest; it's too hard on us enduring their death, let alone watching them rot.  We need wood; Thob made that abundantly clear.  I -must- find a place where we can breach the cavern and wall off an area for wood; maybe even set some traps for animals, so we can have livestock.  I'm ambitious, I know, but I refuse to die without a fight.

Lastly, if I have time, we'll begin the work on arming and training a proper military.  I need to continue taking stock of this place; it's a nightmare, but it won't do to rush in haphazardly.  Here goes everything.

Yes, the save you have is the correct one.

We were doing ok a few seasons back, but a Yeti got in. How the lever got pulled that dropped the gate I have no idea. We had a dozen dead in minutes, including the three military dwarfs. After that I did my best to keep the tantrum spiral at bay, and was mostly successful.

I have both mason shops on the morgue level pumping out coffins. There's a dozen bodies in the refuse pile, a half-dozen scattered about the fort, and twenty odd bodies on the surface.

Most of old Scrubbedcreams is still dark, and completely unexplored.

I think the extent of our animal population was a cat, and a bird or two. Might have been an ewe.

I tried to get bedrooms carved out, but there's not enough beds for the current population, even if we use all the wood that we have.

It's not hopeless, but I'm not too proud of the state I left it in. I'll take another crack at it if you make the year, and if we don't get more takers.

Ye know, being an usurper overseer gone mad with power isn't too bad. It's honestly not that different from being a normal overseer.
To summarize:
They do an epic face. If that fails, they beat said object to death with their beard.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

((Okay, tantrum spiral has destroyed everyone for four attempts now.  I keep savescumming, but I can't get anyone to buckle down and work before they all end up insane or berserk.  The fortress keeps exploding in an orgy of despair and blood.  I got one migrant my first try, skeletal yetis got him.  Next two saves, no migrants.  Fourth attempt, two migrants; one killed by a skeletal yeti, one killed by a berserk dwarf.  "Welcome to Scrubbedcreams, I'm going to beat you to death now".  I'm going to savescum from Ignatzami's OP save one more time, and if I fail I'm reclaiming.  I'll leave the original save as well as my reclaim, in case anyone thinks I crossed a line.  I just don't think it's doable at this time, but here goes one last effort.  I refuse to let this fort die!))

Urist, this fort will not die, even if this band of hearty souls should all pass into the warm loving embrace of the Gods more unlucky fools will stagger onto the scene. After all, all it takes it one wrong turn at Boatmurdered.

I cleaned up the fort a bit, buried a pile more dead, got bedrooms set up, and started using Dwarf Therapist.

We currently (in my save) have 36 Dwarves, better then half are happy. Let me finish this round of cleanup and I'll pass the save over to you. I shouldn't have left things in the state they are in when I handed off to you.

Well, I now present to you a fort of 29 dwarves, all of them content or better, bedrooms for all, and enough drink to last awhile, though food isn't exactly plentiful. This is MUCH closer to where I wanted to leave it for you initially.

If you are not using Dwarf Therapist I highly recommend you download it. I knew that the fort was in bad shape, so I moved the refuse pile outside (no maisma) and locked all the really unhappy dwarves in the old refuse chamber. I then walled them in, and waited for them to starve. In the interim I built bedrooms, tried to finish the dining room, and tried to keep everyone fed.

I got the bedrooms up, got a huge wave of migrants to replace the ones I locked away, and managed to get all the dead recovered and buried. Most of the available seeds that can be recovered on the surface have been, though the surface is still a mess. You have three marksdwarves in a squad with equipment, but no training facility. I intended to turn the old refuse chamber into a barracks, I'm not sure if I actually did or not.

I also began carving new storage chambers below the bedroom level. I intended to get all the equipment, and workshops into the lower 40s to cut down on trips to the surface and make it easier to get to magma. The rooms are all 16 x 16, two are carved out, you can follow the plan, or make up your own.

I finished top side fortifications, and have set up a nest box (in the ice room on topside - 1) for our one bird. I hoped to get a second set up for the other bird the merchants brought. Other then those two birds we have one caged water buffalo.

That should be about it, good luck, and hopefully this round will go smoother.

The upload just finished, double check to make sure you have the right save. If the stupid high-as-possible tower's top level is gone you have the right save.
