We also built some roads on the surface. Usually caravans enter our territory from some random direction. I always send out an escort the moment they're spotted but it takes time to meet up with them. There's the danger that the caravan might get ambushed and slaughtered before the escort can get to them. If they use these roads I can have an escort waiting for them as they enter our territory.

Do caravans really prefer built roads?

Apparently not. Only the liaison used the road.
When Caravans used Wagons I used to build Statues every 3rd tile from the map edge to the entrance to the fort, this would cause single tile units (such as Seiges, ambushes and such) to spawn normally while the caravans would always be forced to take the path...

I wish I got in on the ground floor for this, majorly interesting...

We will probably do another one at some point. This is a very good challenge for experienced players.

Third Spring Report for Salverope

I was handed a list of items that could not be produced this year from the DFTA, an' booze is on it! None of the other restrictions matter much ta this fort, but our booze is dangerously low as is! At season's end, we 'ave no booze left. This could become a very grave problem, very quickly. Other 'n our impending doom, not much else happened. Elves got here, an' we bought out their cloth, and got some extra buckets fer water.

Salverope: Surviver's Report

I don't know how we fended off those goblins, but we did. But then all hell broke loose. I had walled off an exposed water pump in the caverns, to prevent beasts from bellow from entering the fortress. But the water aboveground was frozen, and already 5 had perished of thirst. I had no choice. I ordered the wall destroyed, and the pump activated. The first order was carried out, but everyone on the lower levels was dead before the second order could even be considered. Only the upper level of the fort remains, sealed off from the lower level. Dried out husks lay where dwarfs once stood. This fortress is dehydrating from within. A caravan from the DFTA arrived, and you wouldn't believe the news they had. We were to become a barony! Oh, the irony! A booming fortress one visit, a hell hole the next! I told him to make me the baron, and asked to be escorted to the king in order to "finalize the decision". More goblins then came out of ambush and decapitated the poor sap. I ran for my life, and managed to escape through the safety of the entrance. I'll lure the bastards into oblivion. As for what's next, I'm grabbing a backpack full of luxury meals, and I'll use it to buy myself a nice room in the Mountainholmes, mabye do some accounting work. Like counting the corpses in this hole in the ground. Salverope is no more. The goblins may have fallen for the oldest trick in the book, but their stupidity will not get us booze, or stave off the beasts of unparalleled strength from bellow. I will be lucky to escape with my life.

No...I can't leave my people behind...but what's the point? Everyone I knew is dead...my wife has gone mad...my child was abducted...life isn't worth living anymore...I should just wait to be killed. It would be a mercy.

Hey, you know what would be fun? Let's see who can kill me first. Is is the additional goblin ambush that came out of nowhere just now, or will it be that giant winged newt spewing poison from its jaws? The anticipation is too much to bear...just like living...

Nothing seems to want to kill me. Why? I guess neither killed me in the end. It looks thirst wins the who-gets-to-kill-me race.

o.o Wow. You got all the way to year three, without building a single well? You do realize that the water for a well can be any number of Z levels down, you don't need to go all the way to cavern ground level.

The game just got a lot harder.

I ended up with at least two flying FB's towards the end, so they could have easily flown up the wells. The only water source other than the caverns were murky pools quite a ways away from the fortress. It hardly mattered either way, there was something like 4 squads of goblins at my doorstep, and I had no military to fight them.

Anyway, I hope the rest of you guys have !!Fun!!. Ima go make an adventurer in this world, and explore the fort.

Considering you have plants & seeds and Bars as your groups, and eggs in your item list, the rest of us are pretty much screwed. We cant smelt ore, and we cant farm anymore.

Not impossible. But your stuck with goblinite and whatever you can hunt or fish.

Scaldedabbeys Year 3, Winter Report

Moonstone, Early Winter

I held a meeting with the DTA liason and he brought great news. We are now a county and I've been promoted to count! We then finished discussing trading matters and before he left I asked when will the booze and wood shortages end. He said Hammermoths has made great progress this year, but they still cannot match Scaldedabbeys' wealth. We might get wood or we might get booze. Who knows? Its very random how all this works out. I ordered a squad to escort him on the road we built, but he decided to trek over the hills instead and disappeared into the wilderness.

Maybe we could get lucky and at least get a supply of booze coming from Hammermoths. We can live without wood I thought, but then Molly Anvil went insane and took over the magma forge. She wouldn't talk to anyone. She grabbed some steel bars and some cloth, but then just huddled in the corner of the workshop drawing pictures of forests with the dust on the floor. Dammit she needs wood!

We don't have a single log in the fort and we clear cut all the usable trees in the jungle last year. The only chance is if I can fix our economy to match Hammermoths', guaranteeing we get wood next year. Drastic actions must be taken. I just hope she can hold out long enough.

The others will hate me for this but I'm the count now and they have no choice. We will no longer eat like kings and only eat rat weeds and prickle berries, the trash crops, ugh. I shut down our robe and metal industries and ordered everyone to start hauling stone. The fort will not produce a single thing of value this winter. We will haul all the stone in the fort instead. If we run out of stone to haul we will construct walls. Then tear them down. Then build them up again. Over and over. I will haul stone as well. Maybe the hard work will calm my worries. Damn I need a drink.

Opal, Mid Winter

She only lasted a month and a half before going mad. I could here her shrieks of rage and blood lust coming from the depths below. As well as the screams of terror and panic coming from those in her way. I had to order the militia to action. They marched down the spiral staircase, shoved their way past the fleeing crowd of dwarves, and put her down before she could hurt anyone. Damn I need a drink.

You can also make mead from honeys. That counts as booze I think.  I have plenty of bees but I don't know about you guys. Is it possible to trade for bees?

Too bad you can't make booze out of milk.  The mongols used to do that.

Year 3 Spring Report
From the Journal of Carpenter, Manager

1 Granite 303
The shortages are worse than I thought.  No weapons, wood, or booze.  The first two doesn't concern me as much as the third item.  I forgot to stockpile booze!  Depending on consumption and immigrants, we might run out of booze as early as Summer.  I don't know what to do.  I think I'll keep this to myself for now.  It might hurt morale.  I think it's best if I lie to everyone about why certain goods are going to be scarce...

I ordered the glass furnaces closed until further inspection.  Glassmaker was curious for the reason, but I distracted him by telling him how marvelous I thought his fireclay pots were.  Perhaps he should make more of those?

Because of the ban on eggs, I also ordered all the birds locked up in cages, until their nests have been thoroughly cleaned.  I'll put off the cleaning as long as possible.

I went down the list and forbade the production of various goods, coming up with suitable excuses or alternate tasks for workers.

5 Slate 303
A migrant has arrived.  One.  He joined the militia.  Looks like we had spare equipment for him (Miner was able to create a full 10 sets of armor and steel weapons apparently).

He asked why there was a lone goblin cowering down in the pit.  I forgot it was down there.  I tasked Miner and Mechanic with finding a way to bring magma up to the bottom level of that pit.

11 Felsite 303
An elven caravan has arrived.  We traded as much as possible with them, sticking mostly to their preferred roasts.  I had to carefully fend off questions from the other dwarves as to why I didn't acquire any elven spirits.  I couldn't tell them the real reason, so I made up a story about a rumor I heard involving putrefying contamination from a forgotten beast in this year's elven crop.  Most seemed to believe me.

14 Felsite 303
The only child in the fort has been possessed by a spirit!  It made a wooden amulet, encrusted with black zircon, platinum, chalk and leather.  Why a ghost would want to make an amulet depicting a human is beyond me.  Unfortunately, the value of this single item will probably be reflected negatively in our trade balance with the other forts in the alliance.

19  Felsite 303
Mechanic was up near the huge knockers today.  He was installing a few more traps that we stockpiled from last winter.

He was interrupted by a mechanical whirring sound and a yell, then saw the last goblin bowman fall to his death.  Apparently it was trying to sneak up on him.

23  Felsite 303
The turkeys started honking their alarm again, so Farmer looked out the window.  He saw a single goblin with a mace get knocked off the ledge and fall to his death.  He was waiting to see if there were more goblins, but apparently it was just the lone maceman.  He didn't bother sounding the general alarm and just told hauler that there was more equipment to pick up down in the ditch.

We definitely need to slow our economy down.  I've stopped all engravings, crafts, cooking and non-essential work.  The only thing that is now being done are hauling tasks and the smelting of previously mined Hematite and other metal ores.  Mining of Galena, Tetrahedrite, and Bituminous Coal is also under way.  The roof over the above ground fort is halfway finished.

Year 3 Summer Report
From the Journal of Carpenter, Head Manager, Summer 303

22 Hematite 303
A single migrant has come.  He says he's a doctor and presented himself, requesting a position as our outpost's chief medical officer.  I don't like this guy.  He seems too power hungry.  So I told him he can take on surgical and wound dressing tasks but I'll retain the title of chief medical officer.

Our little group now numbers 41 people.  I do find it strange though that the last two seasons only brought in one migrant each...

13 Galena 303

A human caravan has arrived from the north.  I don't know why they keep approaching from that area, when our main entrance is to the south.  I guess the northern gate confuses them.

23  Galena 303
I was up on the roof of the fort, helping to complete it and keep our fort secure from flying menaces.  I helped design a large retracting bridge over the central pond, so it can be refilled occasionally.  Once we finish with the roof/floor, we'll work on Fortifications around the perimeter and perhaps construct a third floor.

Everything was going fine when suddenly Mechanic yells and crumples over in pain with an arrow sticking out of his thigh.  Goblin archers!  An Ambush!

I ran towards the hatches to go downstairs and away from the dangerous arrows.

Then I realized that Mechanic was shot in the leg and probably needs help getting indoors so I moved towards him.

An arrow whizzed past my head, almost hitting me and made me realize that I'm in as much danger as Mechanic so I started running away again.

But how will it look to everyone else in the fort if I abandon Mechanic now?  So I hesitate.

But nobody's up here on the roof and nobody will find out!

Except Mechanic.

But he's probably gonna die anyway!  Besides, you're more important!  You can't afford to risk your life!

With that reasoning, I ran down the stairs to the lowest levels of the fort.  I busied myself with the smelters, trying to calm myself down and pretending to have been there this whole time.

Over dinner, I heard that it was Ranger that found Mechanic's body a few hours after I left the roof.  None of the goblins got past the ledge traps, but one managed to survive and crawl away in pain.  She tracked him down and put a single crossbow bolt in his head.  She said he deserved worse.  Mechanic died a horrible death.

Nobody found out I was on the roof with Mechanic that day.  I hope nobody ever does.

27 Galena 303
A fey mood has overtaken Leatherworker.  At first I thought it was Mechanic possessing Leatherworker in order to accuse me of betrayal...but no, it was just some fey spirits.  I've never been more grateful for irritating fey as I was today.

Booze is running low.

Year 3 Autumn Report

6 Limestone 303
Leatherworker finished construction of a leather skirt made of panda hide.  Yet another ugly, but costly artifact that will throw our trade balances out of kilter.

I have ordered every job canceled except for hauling.  I intend to stay under the trade guidelines so we can have our booze back.

16 Timber 303
Merchants have arrived.  Unfortunately booze was not available for trade and more dwarves are becoming thirsty.  The smaller above ground well has run out of water and I've ordered that the well be transferred over to the larger pond for now while a more permanent water source is constructed down in the caverns.

22 Timber 303
The liaison from the dwarven home met with me today.  It was an unusual meeting, since he requested some privacy.  I took our meeting in my newly constructed office down by the hospital instead of our normal meeting place up in the dining room. 

He quickly got to the point.  It seems that the King himself has heard of my remarkable managerial skills and have offered to make our home and the surrounding lands a barony!  I was about to defer, and say that our main goal of establishing a dwarven fort way out here was to show that nobility was an unnecessary institution, that hard work for the common welfare was more important.  Then I started thinking.  Perhaps I can have my plump helmet and drink it too.  I can accept the post of Baroness, and not tell the others in our home.  I can try to cure the ills of nobility from inside the system!  The other dwarves won't be affected if they don't know about it, so we can still prove our point!

I think I'll accept, though I requested a few days to think it over...

27 Timber 303
The liaison left today.  In my hand, I hold the legal documents stating that our home and surrounding lands are now the Barony of Kadolshetbeth.

Year 3 Winter Report
From the Journal of Carpenter, Baroness, Winter 303

4 Moonstone 303
I gathered everyone together in the dining room and declared that I was going to throw a party!  People asked what the occasion was and I almost blurted out my new status before I checked myself.  I told them that it was because we had such a good year.  Then someone asked me if there were any drinks left for a party.  I pointed to several barrels of milk.  Smelter snorted in disgust and left the dining room, followed by everyone else.  Only hunter stayed behind.  He shrugged and said, "what can I say?  I like milk."

I'll remember this snub.  Sure, they didn't know it was a party for becoming a barony, but my invitation should have been enough to get people to attend.

11  Moonstone 303
I had a great idea for how we can be more efficient in the kitchens.  We can construct some machinery that grinds the flour for us!  With that, I penned a short note and posted it in the dining room, banning the trade of millstones, at least for the time being. 

Ranger asked if I was planning on giving up the position of broker and promoting someone else.  I don't understand the point of her question.  I think she's trying to make me look bad again, though I can't see how.

12  Moonstone 303
I had the artifacts sitting around in various places around the fort collected and placed in my office.  Mostly it was for safekeeping, but I do admit that I like the look of most of them.  Even that stupid looking floodgate.

20 Opal 303
I was told that the jeweler was acting strangely today.  I saw both GemCutter and GemSetter at lunch and they both seemed fine to me, so I'm not sure what that's about.

26 Opal 303
Jeweler (apparently different from either GemCutter and GemSetter) finished construction of a Green Zircon Cabinet today.  I don't understand how these jewelers can manage to craft such huge pieces of furniture out of one gemstone, but I appreciate the beauty all the same.  I had it installed in my bedroom.

I also just noticed that I have no tomb.  I ordered the construction of one immediately, using up two catacomb spaces.  I also ordered some iron statues made as well as a golden sarcophagus.

3  Obsidian 303
Well that lasted longer than I thought.  We're officially out of drinks and relying solely on well water.  We were able to slack our thirst with milk from our sheep and the caravans for a while, but that's done with now.  I hope we can once more start obtaining booze before everyone else riots.

I was able to design an ingenious well system in the caverns, one that won't allow access to forgotten beasts and other nasties.

It's located in the formerly hidden fort-within-a-fort.  I think I'm going to move some people to live down in the caverns permanently.  There certainly is more room for animals to wander around than the inner courtyard above.

15 Obsidian 303
A honey badger became enraged for no reason and ran into our traps.  It died.  Stupid badgers.

Damn only 2 migrants the whole year even though you're the wealthiest fort. Have you been giving the dwarven caravan a bad profit?

I want to see the ruins too. How abut posting the save?
