Can anyone advise me on how to gen a more versatile embark?

I would like more than three types of badgers and a few chickens herding around this place.

Try multiple biomes/alignments.

I do, but I keep ending up with an embark that is largely populated by less than 5 specie of animals. More often than not, it's right around 3-4.

This of course isn't counting things like groundhogs.

Not sure if this is accurate but from what I recall the largest variety of animals I saw was in a tropical embark.

Gen a high rain, high temperature high savagery world and embark on an Untamed Wilds Tropical Moist Broadleaf Forest. Bonus points if you find one near an Untamed Wilds Tropical Savannah and manage to get both biomes in one embark.

That's basically the best you can do with regards to biodiversity.

Tropical moist broadleaf forests are kinda TOO diverse for usefulness... the assloads of gibbons, other monkeys and various primates are near-useless apart to train your hunters.

Best biomes: Savage badlands (or any desert really) - Savage mountain - Savage tropical forests that are NOT moist - Savage tropical shrubland - Savage tropical freshwater swamp.

There's a bit of crap in the swamps, including the incredibly useless slugmen and snailman,

I got one-humped camels, two-humped camels, vultures, buzzards, and the occasional lion in my Badlands embark.

I've embarked in a freshwater marsh...

The only things I get are geese and capybaras.

Oh, and capybara men and giant capybaras.

*Don't attack giant capybaras. They'll tear arms off like badgers.*

Wait a sec, lions doesn't live in desert biomes...

I highly recommend SAVAGE deserts. Then you get the awesome Giant Desert Scorpion and giant feline predators.

The only problem in deserts are buzzards.

Eventually. I have been on one for 20 years and have seen 2 GDS and a few leopards and jaguars. Buzzards are annoying only in that they are always springing the cage traps I set of those leopards. The vultures on the other hand go for the food in my surface farms. We've had a couple of battles. My pasture is by the farms and they got several lambs until I put a bear in the same pasture with the sheep. That mostly took care of it.
