Computer-generated language
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:40:47 pm »

Among my several interests and hobbies, I am very much interested in languages, and have, on occasion, even attempted to make them (this, incidentally, is why i really don't like Toady's language system). One of the things that I've thought of pertaining to language the idea that one could construct a computer program that could create a language (or language family) that follows a logical development, possibly including influence from other languages in the "region", and such like.

Now, I'm not proposing or suggesting that anyone here code such a complex monstrosity, nor am I asking for advice on how I could code it. I'm merely asking whether it would be a feasible thing to do. so, is it?

I've some generators that sort of do this (I'm at work right now and the name escapes me), and can run mutation rules to simulate natural evolution from archaic version of a language to later forms. But even then, the output is mostly just vocabulary, it can't handle grammar well, and the output is too regular.

I remember participating on a huge thread in which improvements to Fortress languages were proposed.  There were quite a few things in there that might well be of interest.

You might want to ignore my posts.  I was obviously in one of my frequent verbose phrases and, although I still stand by what I said, I wish in hindsight I'd used words of less syllables. :)
