What piece of adamantine armor to make first?
« on: April 06, 2011, 04:00:49 am »

So in my current fort I've got my military dwarves all kitted out in bronze (no iron unfortunately.)  Now that I've struck adamantine, what's the most important piece of armor to make first?  I'd rather give them all breastplates or gauntlets or something than just make a couple complete sets.

probably chest armour if that is the most often hit piece of armor, but a bad hit to the head is probably always fatal without addy whereas a chest strike is probably often woundinf... maybe science isd in order? To the !!Arena!!
Actually a shield is probably the best, or a dress since sit covers everything i think?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I'm told that shield material only matters when you're hitting things with the shield, it doesn't change block chance.

If you're in a badger-heavy land...

Gauntlets. On all of your men.

I have an entire room of no-armed vets that are about to get a magma burial because of those little fuckers.

A mail shirt is hella useful. Get it.

Yeah, I think I'll just make adamantine mail shirts and modify the uniform so they all put them on under their bronze plate.

Doesn't Cotton Candy's low density cause problems? I thought it was impractical to turn into armor for that reason.

Problems for weight-dependent weapons, like hammers, maces, crossbow bolts, and crossbows themselves when used in melee. Shields shouldn't be made from adamantine not because adamantine is bad for shields, but because material doesn't matter for shield strength; though the adamantine shield will be generally indestructible by heat, it won't do as much damage in a bash attack as a steel shield would.
The one exception to when you want an adamantine hammer is where you give your hammerer dwarf one to stop dwarven punishment hammerings from being as damaging/lethal.

Everything else is fine for being made from adamantine, except for clothing, which will wear out over time.

What Lovechild said, if your dwarves are knocked unconscious then enemies tend to aim for the head for a quick kill. With adamantine helms it's pretty unlikely they'll be able to hurt them.  Of course if they're already bleeding out due to having their hands ripped off by a ravening badger swarm this won't help in the long term.

Has anyone run tests with layering? I'm concerned about adamantine's lacklustre performance against projectiles, if there's no way around that I may prefer a pure steel outfit. Steel does well enough against normal blades that they aren't a major concern.

If layering doesn't work and we want a mixed uniform, wouldn't we prefer steel for body and adamantine for limb armour? Best protection against penetrating body shots and having one's limbs hacked off. Not so sure about helms, but adamantine may be preferable here as well.

well, sadly clothes are the only one that cover nose, fingers and toes due to armor definition bugs and whatnots.
