Plural of "dwarf"
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:39:28 pm »

I've seen it both ways. Dwarves, to me, seems more widely used and correct, but Dwarfs is a short, stubby word for a short, stubby race so it also fits.

I believe the English terms are infact Dwarfs and Elfs, but it was Tolkien that made Dwarves and Elves acceptable.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Dwarves.

If it ends with an "f", the plural removes the "f" and uses "ves"

Examples:

Elf -> Elf -> Elves
Dwarf -> Dwarf -> Dwarves
Sheaf -> ]Sheaf -> Sheaves

Not always.

Though in the case of dwarf, dwarfs is apparently correct but it doesn't seem right... .

"Trouble."

Seriously, though, I use "dwarves" precisely because "dwarfs" is considered correct by Spell Check, since "dwarf" has a real-world meaning as a verb (and a noun, but that's considered offensive IIRC); it makes it feel rightly fantasy-ish and surreal.

Dwarfs if they are acting like like typical dwarfs.
Dwarves if they are in some way acting in some way superior--showing intelligence or ingenuity, or bringing a tear of joy your eye for the epic win.
Dorfs when they run out on a battlefield to pick up a sock.

Dwarves when I'm considering them as a homogenous group; dwarfs when I'm thinking of a set of specific individuals. Like fish and fishes.

Both are acceptable in the English language. I, personally, favor "Dwarves"
