First time I ever saw a heard of badgers...
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:49:08 am »

But they are making me very nervous right now.

I anticipate multiple reclaim attempts on this embark site.

Badgers appear to be the reincarnation of the carp in earlier versions."Land Carp". Shudders!

They got a piece of my farmer just now, but he got away with little more than a few bruises.

yeah everyone's getting conga lines of badgers sweeping though the maps.  Good thing they don't come in very often.  I recommend atom smashing the badgers before they get to your mushroom mushrooms.

"Don't come in often"? On my embark the only animals that come in are badgers, badger people, giant badgers, and moose/panda people.

These guys are running a marathon across my map. The only thing keeping me safe is pure luck.

The caravan was slaughtered.

Badgers? Badgers?! We don't need no steenkin' badgers!

That's why I love my traps. Those badgers might have large claws, but they are next to unprotected against traps. A couple stones dropped on their heads will make them pretty mellow, and seeing their limbs go flying off in pretty arcs after they've met my *large, serrated green glass disc*s tend to permanently discourage any further hostile action, like breathing.

There's a river crossing my map, and I've made all of one narrow bridge, decked out with traps, over it. Those badgers pretty much queue up for the chance to cross that bridge.

I just murdered them all after making some obsidian swords, will that mean I won't be seeing them for a bit?

Furthering that question: how does the localized wildlife spawn and maintain itself?

I was going to try and trap/train the badgers, but they pissed me off when they took out two legendaries that refused to obey my water zone orders.

Now they're all red smears on the ground.

Again, normal badger people/boars/sows aren't the problem. The giant ones will take the arms off of multi-layered adamantine-armored champions with no effort at all.

I'd have to disagree.

Badgers shouldn't be as dangerous as they are in this game. Civilians routinely die on me, simply by walking near them. I'm already having to burrow my dwarves every time a congo line of giant badgers show up, now I need to when the little ones come around as well.

Yep I got one of those maps also, as soon as I see the conga line I sound the alarm for everyone to go inside. Currently my only idea is to build a crapload of cage traps around my entrance and capture a few, that or build an archer tower and try to kill a couple, not that killing animals makes them stop coming, but maybe if I can tame a handful of badgers I could at least keep the perimeter safe.

Ironically badger people are push overs so I slaughter them each time as vengeance against the badger super race.
