 Mist energy is pretty much identical to crystal energy, except mist energy can't be traded and it caps at 100. The higher-tier stuff will require some crystal energy to craft as it needs like 500 energy to craft or something. I understand this system and why a MMO creator would go with it. They pull it off fine by opening up a good system to acquire it through ingame money. It's easy and relatively cheap. If you want to keep playing after t2 you can. It slogs down crafting economies sure, but so long as you can continue to play if you so wish then it's not terribly intrusive.

Spiral Knights has been out for 8 months and I've heard this accusation since day 1. In my book, there's little sign that it's going that way.

You can still easily make enough crowns to buy 100 CE in a single carefully-planned Tier 1 or Tier 2 run (choose your gate carefully, making sure to hit Treasure Vaults/Graveyards in the second half of the Tier, and bring your crafting mule as a Crown Doubler if you don't have a full party of guildies). Made even easier by the fact that you don't have to stand around spamming for an hour to trade the recipes and materials you got from your run anymore.

That said, I actually would like Minerals to be converted into mist energy instead of a tiny amount of crowns. Their Mineral/Gate mechanic looked cool on paper, but doesn't work in practice.

EDIT: Also, the best way to start banking a sizable CE reserve is to buy communally and save it. Going in halfsies with a guildy before I was able to afford it on my own changed everything for me.

For what it's worth, I haven't put a single cent into this game. Between doing runs, selling mats, crafting and selling recipies, I now have 700,000 crowns and 20,000 CE. I'm fully equipped with 5* weapons and armor. I've been to and killed all of the bosses.

You do not need to spend real cash to do well in this game.

Done a solo run... the last totem room killed me twice, esp. when I'm surrounded by zombies while next to a totem -- I couldn't attack! There's one jelly farm in there which helps my crowns level a bunch though. Now I only need to wait for mist to regen, and I'll have access to tier 2.

I still have that cobalt armor... new players looking for a free 2-star armor, tell me when you see me!

holy crap, I finally got to tier two last night, and my god it's an insane jump up..... might have something to do with the first level being an arena.  Me and one other guy, both never to tier 2 before, managed to get all the way through without dieing (gotta love that blaster) and made 8000 crowns each, I think it broke or something because everyone was dropping 4+ gold coins each.

 I dunno about trying t2 arenas with t2 equipment. I suppose I just want much more protective armor before trying it out, especially with the new combos enemies are getting.

I finally gained access to tier 2... I solo'ed it half-way (then decided to back off), died two times but still got enough crowns to recover all energies used. I also crafted a Cutter. It seems to be a better choice than Caliber... I like my attacks swift. Crafted 3 2-star items, purchased energy at market price twice, still got over 500 crowns and 130 crystal energy left. Good enough for today I think.


Btw, should we keep a document of all our in-game names mapped to bay12 forum names? A google spreadsheet maybe? I got some invites in-game, including one to join a "Wolf downs" (IIRC) guild... I don't know if it's from bay12 or not and it's tiring to scan this thread once again.

... I hate some people. They suck. So much.

I just joined a group who was looking for a fourth to do royal jelly. We get through to depth 14 and I'm talking about what vials everyone has. Only one curse vial has dropped the entire time, and the guy who has it says trollface and throws it at me. Then rushes in solo while the other two guys are non responsive. He dies and leaves, but not before throwing away poison pots on some jellys. Both the other guys get kicked from the group, I assume because they went afk for a while. One logs back in and says he has to eat, so now im waiting for him and his buddy to show back up so we can keep going. I hope all their potions don't decay before they get back... I know hearts decay, but not sure about the vials.


This game is getting kinda boring. It's kinda fun when you have some good people to play with, but gets a bit repetitive. Especially when you keep getting terrible groups that fail miserably on the simplest things.


Well that sucked, waited for them then did jelly run. The leading levels were easy as pie, got to jelly king with full capsules and lots of vials. Then the other two guys lagged bad while I beat on him. I must have done 5k damage to him as well as poisoning 3 times and hitting him with fire and shock vials 3 times each.Kept wailing on him and blocking and hitting and blocking, using capsules when I got low. He got to the spinning thing after maybe 20 seconds then I beat on him for a while more after that. Resed twice during the whole spin thing when he kept breaking my shield (was focused entirely on me, other two guys had died, one resed and died again without really doing anything and other never resed) and I think I ALMOST had him, but he just wouldn't die. I probably would have had him solo, the two guys I was with said they lagged really bad and they didn't really do anything the entire fight.

I did all but one of the floors and then the game crashed on me.I really want to start towards an antigua too.
