Waterfall: How to get the Happy bonus?
« on: April 04, 2011, 05:14:31 pm »

What conditions must be satisfied in order for Dwarves to get the Happy bonus for admiring a Waterfall?

Do they actually have to walk through the mist? Is it enough for the waterfall to be in line-of-sight? In the same room? On the other side of a Glass or Gem Window?

I've embarked on a rain forest map with a 20-level waterfall, and I'd like to put it to use.

Just keep in mind that it could very well be killing your fps.  Waterfalls are notorious for that.

It's pretty fast and smooth so far, but it's still early in the game... late summer of the first year. The waterfall drops off into a 20-level-deep sheer-sided east-west canyon containing another river, so that the two rivers form a 'T' with the north-south leg dropping in from 20 levels up. Can I dam the lower river with Magma => Obsidian and flood the canyon? Or will the water just exit the "source" map edge?

... I seem to recall that you can't dam a river so as to flood any higher than its entry point.

A natural river that is dammed will not flood over the point of its entry, but if you wall of the edge of the map and pump it up 1 z-level, it will become a lake-like atmospehere.

Just to second the above - see this: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Happiness - note the trigger for the waterfall happy thought - it's walking through mist.

Well... my rain forest seems to freeze over in the winter, for some reason... so while it's frozen I can safely re-engineer the waterfall to pass through my Dining Room.

Not the old "Crocodiles in the Dining Room" trick again???

I shouldn't have any problem getting rid of the water, since I'm twenty freakin' levels up the side of a cliff... I can simply pipe it outside. Getting rid of the water's occupants might be more problematical, especially if they misunderstand the expression "Dining Room".

I built a wading pool that a waterfall spilled into, and had it on the path everyone had to follow to get food.

Worked pretty good for happines; too bad about all the dorfs that got washed overboard.

I know!  :D

I'll add a side-channel to my Magma pump-stack, so that if the water starts to flood my Dining Room and drown my Dwarves, I can dump in some Magma to block the pipe with Obsidian!

What could go wrong?  :D

Pumping the water out works nicely, I've found. Just keep the pump going.
