Probably.

I have a yearly autoback up on. It automatically saves and backs up the save every year. Every once and a while I go through the save folder and delete the backups I don't need anymore.

Why isn't this option turned on automatically? I was running under that assumption...

Autosave is set to NONE by default.  If you want it on, you need to edit your d_init.txt file and change the AUTOSAVE and possibly AUTOBACKUP settings.

Really? I seem to remember it being set to SEASONAL by default, hmm...

This definitely needs to be fixed-  saves don't take up a lot of space (by modern standards) yet getting surprises like these is most enraging..

I have one old save but I don't want to give up yet, it seems to be somewhat nonstandard - the game doesn't just say that the save is corrupt it simply keeps loading it and never loads it. I could post it up tomorrow if someone experienced is willing to take a look at it.
