I dont know, I dont DREAM Dwarf Fortress, I merely enjoy myself a lot playing it and reading about it, when the mind wanders during the day, it frequently wanders to topics of Dwarf Fortiness, for example how I can get my pottery industry running, or get them archers to practice, or how to get the damn butchering to work.

lol, when I have a tiny bit of spare time at work. I write stories about my dwarfs, and send it to coworkers.

I've stopped playing other games, though I'm not averse to the idea. I've already pre-ordered Portal 2, and I've never pre-ordered a game before.

That said, I usually tend to buy games that I'm going to get at least a hundred hours of game time out of. I tend to play games not to cultivate skill at the game, but as a means of self-expression (so I favour strategy games and rpgs that let me build a character.) DF is the perfect expression of what I look for in a game.

I find it bizarre that casual games are so popular. I can't fathom why people are willing to pay the same amount of money for them as for an immersive experience that tells a story, or that promises hundreds of hours of unique experiences, or pushes graphics technology to the max. I suspect that casual gamers are most likely new to gaming or lack imagination.

I've always felt that the main reason I play games is to play with what could be, and thus expand what I interpret that to mean. Imaginative people play games that enhance their imagination. I don't think people who only play casual games have much imagination and don't let themselves experience imagination enhancing experiences.

I know exactly what you mean. I don't buy commercial games anymore because I've learned that they just sit around unplayed. A lot of times it feels like I grew up but video games didn't. Somehow, Dwarf Fortress is different.

Nicely put.  I've also gone for the lazy newb pack recently, it really is well done.  Also, like the OP, think I'm gonna try the new stuff out now.... harvest moon won't have anything on my honey and camel farm.   

I personally feel like the games were becoming "younger" while I was growing up... Back in early 90th they were mostly simple yet didn't bother with manuals, "easy button" or ESRB rating. And yet they had some awesome appeal which made my bearded uncle to play them at work.

I feel like most of the games today are "from 10 to 90", which in most cases means "interesting for 10 and 90 only".

P.S. No offence to 10 and 90 y.o. forum users there, it was just a way to express my thoughts hehe.

Probably like rabbit or chicken. Although too much cat may kill you, I imagine.
