Do all animals see through stealth?
« on: April 04, 2011, 12:28:06 am »

I'm thinking about making some kitten sentinels, for the obvious reasons.

Yes, anything with functioning eyes will do.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Yes, anything with functioning eyes will do.
But kittens are the best choice, I assume?

I suggest Russian bears. Unicycles make things much more fun.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Ah I see you're new to DF. See, nothing can be "the best" until you add a substantial amount of magma. I suggest flaming kittens.

So... Can animals be the product of reactions?
Could we make a reaction that creates kittens?
Then wait for a mood to get an artifact kitten?
Then set it on fire so that we have a perpetually flaming artifact kitten?

My fort I ran out of kittens at one point because badgers raged on them too often inbetween the goblin attacks. Thankfully, I had a large supply of roosters from my eggsplosion in year 1 so they stood in while the cats re-breeded. There's a cap to the number of animals allowed in the fort and my eggsplosion hit it by year 2 so cats could not give birth until there were deaths.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I think someone made chickens that laid bees, so it might be possible to mod in like a smelting (or custom) reaction that produces kittens.  As long as you had it assigned to a profession that got moods, then there'd be the small chance of getting an artifact kitten.  Which would be awesome.

Then set it on fire so that we have a perpetually flaming artifact kitten?

... and of course, this is the DF Player's first and default (and entirely correct) reaction to the idea of somehow making artifact kittens:

Set it on fire!

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

You cannot create large animals, only vermin :(

Yes, anything with functioning eyes will do.

Does this include vermin? Specifically, bees? I haven't played around with them enough yet to know, and there seems to be a dearth of information on the subject in the wiki pages.

What if the kittens were modded to be made of lignite?

My exact thought. And then we launch them at elves with lignite bridges. Flaming bridges flinging flaming kittens to enflame the elves. AWESOME.
