I only have a single core 3.06 ghz celeron, ran DF fine, 100 - 200 dwarves, 15-25 fps on the 31.18 version

Right now that computer died and I'm running it on a AMD Sempron 3000+ laptop, which i guess is 2.1 ghz. 1.8 ghz. It's running a fort of 200 fine (well, 15-21 fps). But I've been limiting myself to 2x2 maps until i get a new PC, though one map i'm playing has MAX z-levels possible, a river + volcano, 150 dwarves, etc.

For 2x2 maps you have to search a lot of worlds to find a good spot with river + volcano.

Another thing I have noticed...

Very few people have uploaded laggy saves to DFFD.

It might be useful if people used seasonal backups and collected a few before and after fps going to shit saves.

let's start with this:
this is a 2x2 lag free (TM) embark with 130 dwarves and first cavern breached.
(1 irrelevant mod and 1 so so: the first enable all metals for every use, the second remove clothes wear)

the laggy one I will update this evening

How big is the world you generated? I think size matters a lot, because world events must be computed in realtime too.

Also, what rendering mode do you use? Try VBO, since it should do all the rendering just in video memory, easing memory bus load. Also, try to identify any memory resident programs that could eat your CPU time.

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Watching this thread.

Most of my forts had died because of the FPS issue. Well, my laptop is surely not the best one  but still FPS seems to steadily decrease over time no matter what I do - atom-smashing, traffic limitation, 50 dorfs max, no flowing water, bathing etc. It's just ridiculous - after half a year in which a lot of items had been destroyed, blood dfcleaned and a large part of the aboveground map walled off (sorry traders) my FPS dropped from 70 to 60 (though the walling did help for a while). Something is very wrong in the state of Armok, I'd say.
I've read about the military clothing trick and I'll try it my new game. Though still not sure how to destroy rotten clothing... smash the cabinets maybe? Any suggestions?

well, my personal enemy right now are sieges. even the single, last, enemy of the siege reduced my fps from 70 to 20.

when the last one dies the fps returns normal... dunno.

seems every fort I do dies of fps death, but in a sort of different fashion every time and it just seems the problem keeps moving.

That sounds like lag due to the siegers constantly trying to path into your fortress and/or to any dwarf or dwarf-owned creature on the map to try and kill things.

Right well i just played a pretty lag free game!  A siege backed by upwards of 30 trolls came to say hi in the eve of the 4th year.  It was a 3x3 no river embark, and I had 127 dwarves, and the FPS was at 70(40) which is great!

i had conga lines of badgers to deal with.
i had a panda assault year 1.  that was weird.
i atom smashed an elf but not his supplies 1 tile behind, cursing me with a large amount of wooden weapons.
all my animals died because apparently they need to eat now.  how am i supposed to chain animals at the gate to ward off thieves if they starve to death there?  my guard moose was cool while it lasted.
my dwarf heartland Liaison had the title "fisherdwarf" urist mcambushspringer.  they never used to have professions.
and i was rattled by the magma men coming in with the migrants until i figured out that it was just a graphics thing an they were just glazers.

oh yeah, i used all ramps and no stairwells, due to someone's advice above.  The combo of no stairs, new updates and no water made it a pretty lag free game!  The location kinda sucked though, and there was no iron, and there were ugly ugly brown rocks, so onward to better fortresses, ones less prone to siegedeath.

my no lag(tm) fort is on the largest world option from the create world now menu.

That will be a major factor - I can't find the thread but it was documented that world size has a huge impact on FPS, mainly because it has to track all those extra armies and civilizations.

well, up 'til now is going strong and well. and I'm on a 2ghz pc, not exactly a monster.

I think no soft may have a major role here. I'll need to redo my megaproject on a 3x3 no wear embark and see what it happens once it reaches a comparable size of what I've now done on my primary embark. I'll remove fps cap and see how far can I get

Yeah, the world size matters a lot. I play "smaller" ones (33x33 afair) though sometimes it takes time to gen a descent world with iron and flux and heavily forested areas.

Since when is 25fps a bad speed?

I was running on 10fps for a year before I upgraded my computer. A YEAR! It was just fine for me
