Ok, shooting the ballista arrows through magma isn't setting them on fire for me..

I don't have any lignite on my map.. even though I have 16k magnetite, 44k limestone, 61k marble. I tried throwing some wood in there, which all went poof and burned away too fast to really know if I had a decent fire going on.

Have you tried a multitile wide magmafall? The ballista bolt might just travel fast enough to make it through a single tile wide magmafall without igniting.

Try getting lignite/coal from the caravan and using that for grates.

He might not be able to. Maybe let grass/moss grow there and get a fire imp to set it alight? Wood might last longer in normal fire than magma, I'm not sure how that works out.
