Self playing game

A version of Dwarf that plays it's self. So you can just watch. Like a little ant farm, but filled with alcoholic midgets.

After deciding your embark group's set up and after you choose an embark point the game would more or less play it's self. The dorfs would decide where and when to mine. What to grow. More or less everything.

It would probably be it's own game mode.

I also play on the longest history setting for hard mode.

A big no to this one. Dwarf Fortress is meant to be played, not watched.

Hmm.. perhaps as a "god mode" mode where you are a god, always watching never interfering.
This could be entertaining for some.
And when you get tired of the fort, unleash a cataclysmic event and watch the FUN you have unleashed.

It would take a lot of time to code a proper AI, for no real benefit. Toady's time would be better psent on one thousand awesome stuff.

acatully the ai code could be used for the Hill villiges that are planned and also alowing you to retire your fort, and explore it as an active fort in adventure mode. of course this should only go in  when the game is nearing version 1.o so the doesn't have to update the A.I. ever version, so if this was to got in it's at least 10 years away...

Why would you wait until the game is extremely complex and nearing completion before you start working on getting the computer to be able to understand how to run the things it needs to run?  Something this complex would require that the AI be developed in tandem with the addtional levels of complexity that go into the game.

Having a game that literally plays itself might be a bit much, except as maybe a gimmick where you can watch worldgen creatures build their own procedural cities, but there are obvious reasons why there should be something that allows for AI-controlled "bustling towns" that have villagers go about their daily business, if only for Adventurer Mode.  (And this is, after all, a part of the next development push.)

Further, even in Dwarf Mode, there is something to be said for giving the player the ability to automate certain routine decisions.  We've already had "Standing Orders" such as ordering more charcoal fired up if you start to run low as a winning suggestion in the ESV. 

There is nothing wrong with having routine maintainance of a fortress become automatable.  As a game about creativity, however, I don't really think we need to have the game auto-designating the layout of our fortresses, however.

I agree. (IIRC This is exactly the kind of thing that killed the Master Of Orion computer game series)

Or add framework to user made AIs - but this also should be added when the game is finished.

This is very useful! Let the computer play games for us so we have more time to do our homework or talk to real people!

Will the computer also donate money to Toady if he likes playing DF a lot?

I think it would be pretty neat to have a game like this where you could watch people building little villages/forts. I also doubt Toady will ever do it for Dwarf Fortress, so it's a bit of a moot point.

What are you taking about? Those two games were great! I still have the install disc for the first one somewhere around here, too.

Although, having  an AI build cities and towns would be interesting. I believe sites are abstract until visited? Perhaps you could be given a chance to watch the build process when that happens (likely at some accelerated pace). Basically, flesh out the site's history.
