Unit List Colors
« on: April 02, 2011, 11:11:10 pm »

What do the different colors on the unit list mean?  Also, what do the letters I sometimes see in the margin at the top left of the screen mean?  Thanks?

Color represent the dwarf's highest skill. They are documented here: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Skill#Skills . Peasants are dark cyan (aqua).
Are you referring to the C and the R? Those signify available reports. You can view them with 'R'.

A red C means combat, a blue S means sparring, and a green H means hunting.

Is that what the letters at the edge of the map are? I was wondering about them...

What about the other non-dwarf units?? like tame animals, wild animals, hostiles, etc... they also get different colors and I have no clue what they mean....

I have tame animals in brown, dark gray, white, magenta,  light gray, dark green, dark blue, red and dark red....

Wild animals in dark gray, and light blue with dark blue background (those are fish creatures)...

Any ideas??

PS: why is my forum avatar not showing??

I'm pretty sure red animals are children (just like dwarven children). The other colors might just be their normal color but I'm not sure

Each animal species has a defined color; I imagine this is mainly to tell different creature types apart even if they have the same symbol. The darkish red ones are young/child versions, just like with dwarves.

*checks fort* you're right the dark red ones are children, I'm not so sure about the color=species thing... right now I have:

Brown: rabbits, dogs, goat, chicken-fowl
White: sheep, gooses, llamas, alpacas
Dgray: cats, guinea-fowl, water buffaloes
Magenta: pigs
Lgray: cavys
Dgreen: duck-fowl
Dblue: blue pea-fowl
red: turkey-fowl

wild animals:
Lblue (Dblue background): carps
Dgray: buzzards

Actually, I think the dark blue background indicates swimming/submerged. If it's flashing it means the unit is drowning. I can't find a reference for that though.

Dark blue in water, light blue in air ( as in thrown in the air, not flying). Flashing yellow background means moderate injury, while red is normally serious injury.
Each animal as a color and letter depending on race, with childs darkish red.

The color animals show up as in the Unit list is the same color they show up as when you're looking directly at them - [COLOR:x:y:z] in the creature's raws.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yeah, animal color is just what color that animal is. Kind of. An animal species can only have one displayed color, currently, so if you have a bunch of dogs that are described as having black, brown, white, and grey fur, they'll still all have brown letters and names.
