Try the Gothic 1, 2, or even 3 (though start with 1 or 2) or Risen (which is by the same studio as Gothic 1, 2 and 3, but they got forced out of the IP by the publisher).

Risen is standalone, and pretty awesome. Third person rpg with crafting and lots of neat little features.
