Mysterious constructions grant legendary skill, or not?
« on: October 18, 2006, 04:02:00 pm »

I had a mysterious construction grant my fisherdwarf legendary woodcrafter skill.  However, people on another forum were insisting that this is impossible.  Just posting to see whether I have a bug or if this is normal behaviour.

I would say that this is one of the most common confusion items that I see on these forums.

Posession grants an artifact, and no skill.

Fey Mood, Fell Mood, and Secretive Moods all grant artifacts, legendary skill and the acommpanying stat raises that come with gaining skill level.

Note that it is also possible for someone who is already legendary to make an artifact, and not become legendary in anything as a result of using his already legendary skill.

The skill that becomes legendary is limited to certain construction/crafting skills, so it is possible for someone to become legendary in a skill they do not normally possess.

I'm trying to remember, I think there's one mood besides possessed that also doesn't grant a legendary skill. But I might be mistaken.

Here's the link to the wiki page explaining the strange moods:

And also, since it occurs to me that this might have been what your forum was fixated on:

The way possession works is that it fixates on your dwarfs' highest crafting skill (i.e., the highest skill that can be used to create something).  This fudges a little to use, say, mining or engraving to create stone objects, but skills with no applicability to creating an artifact whatsoever get passed over.  Thus, your fisherdwarf ended up creating an artifact with their woodworking skill, since their fishing skills got passed over.
