Selective Blindness or Weak Search-fu? You decide.
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:26:55 pm »

Dear Armok Worshippers,

I'm having lots of fun with DF, but one thing I feel is missing is the ability to see where the cursor is in the Fortress world. I'm aware that you can see relative co-ordinates whhen placing and reading notes, but I'm really like to be able to see where the cursor is when designating a set of stairs or walls, so that I know that said stair or wall will meet up with other constructions I have planned. ending up with a critical one-square difference between a line of pumps and the river can make a big difference!

Have I been completely missing this, or does it not exist? If not, why not?

Luge.

Apparently every tile on your screen is a yellow sand up/down stair, because it's still there.

I think he might want coordinates of it.

Precisely. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

You aren't offered the co-ordinates of the cursor, but you can exploit its controls: Arrow keys move it one tile, and shift-arrow keys move it ten.

I know of no other way, sorry.

just hopping back and forth between z levels is fast enough that I've never even thought about setting up a coordinate system.

I feel silly for asking, really. But since the game lends itself to advanced Fortress planning on bits of graph paper and the like, I'd have thought it to be a pretty standard feature. I've seen some pretty complex Dwarf bedroom layout designs on the 'web that I'd really rather have co-ordinates for it I were to try to build them..

Do you mean that you want to see where it is across z-levels?  Like, you want to build a down stair, but want to know where the x/y coordinate is of the up stair below it without going down a level?  I don't know any way to do that, btw, just wondering.

If you are talking about automating the selection, you can make macros I hear, but I've never done it.  I rarely use bedroom designs from the wiki anyway, I always try to make them fit in with the design of the fortress.

Get quickfort/chromafort, allows you to define everything in terms of pictures or .csv files [easy to do via excel], multi z level work as well.

I'm not sure I understand, but would dfposition of dfhack be of any use?

Pressing K gives you a view of where the cursor is at it's default location, if this helps.
