Any tips for a Noob?
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:21:44 pm »

I'm just starting on a new base after 2 failed. Any advice on how to better protect my fortress? E.G. Don't flood your base ETC. (I have only been playing DF for 3 days,Including today).

Dig deep, make your home in the caverns(with magma) seal self off from world until ready

There are dwarves that are nothing but useless sacrifices - Miners are not one of them.

Then take weeks to cover it, or at least check out the tutorials there.

You're not going to learn anything (and nor will we be able to teach you anything) if you're so unwilling to put some amount of effort into it. It's called a learning cliff for a reason.

http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/

Probably the best tutorial available because it actually wants you to play along with it as you go, and shows you most of the basic features, while still leaving some stuff to explore on your own at a later time.

Crap I'm getting attacked by a group of about 10 badgers, 2-3 of them enraged. Well only 1 is attacking, but I saw a group of 10. I don't like camping underground, mainly because what happens when the migrants come?

Dwarves are supposed to be underground, though.

Right now, I think I'm going to build a wall around my stockpiles and reinforce it (With door that will be forbidden)

Build some sealed rooms with fortifications on the surface, only accessible from your underground base, and have tunnels between them. That way you can station marksdwarves in safe places to provide covering fire for immigrants while they head towards your base.

PS the locks of forbidden doors can be picked by thieves and left open.

RUN!  RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN!  :P

1. Always have lots of booze.
2. Dig and Dwarf both start with "D".  You do the math.
3. "Losing is FUN!"  Learn it.  Live it.
4. There are no stupid questions.  There are, however, many, MANY stupid answers.  You have been warned.
5. ???
6. Profit!

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

There's an easier way. Build the wall, and only allow access through a stairwell in the ground.

What I usually do is wall off an entire area above ground (no doors) for use as a pasture/farm, and create a second entrance to get to the trade depot, with nice long hallways that wind all over that the weapon traps turn into my own personal blender of death. And a lever operated bridge as a shortcut over some pit of nightmares (latest one is a nice gater pit) for when my dwarves need to get out that way.
