Or she could just include a handful of flaxseeds or two of walnuts as a regular part of her diet, which accomplishes the same thing but is vegetarian friendly. Since the fish only don't produce the omega-3s, but simply gather them from algae, there's also plenty of sources that take their omega-3s from the algae directly, like spirulina/chlorella drinks (so I've heard, anyways, don't partake myself).

Well, thanks for your concern, but at the moment I'm sticking with the pills.  I should add that they're a measure against the bipolar-esque symptoms that made me drop out of school, so--in a couple years, when I'm out of undergrad and hopefully have the continuing nervous breakdowns under control, I'll consider messing with my diet.

All I know is that this works right now and I have a lot of other things I need to fix outside of my omega-3 source, so I'm going to stick with trying to get those taken care of before I do that sort of fine-tuning.

Try tuna, It's extremely meaty, for a fish.

Also, try salmon, it's delicious and you can tell your friends how you ate a shark recently.

I get my fish from those I catch during Summer and Spring, and from the deli at the farmers market or local grocery. I have a pretty excellent family recipe for baked fish and chips that's simple and quite tasty. It entails crackers, some spices, potatoes, butter, and any light fish fillets. Anyone I know who's eaten it hasn't disliked it; even people who don't care for fish.

Sorry, I meant to add that if they were working for you you should keep doing the same thing, as its probably just a piece in a larger overall treatment and, like you said, getting the consistant amount certainly makes things easier. Was just simply pointing out that if you do ever decide to go off the pills, it doesn't mean you need to start eating fish (although if you want to, thats fine as well). The misconception that Omega-3s only come from fish and thus everyone needs to eat fish just sort of bugs me. :/

I am glad do see so many responses and suggestions.

I think I'll be picking up a sack of walnuts next time I'm at the store and just eat a handful of them per day.
I'll get my hands on cooked fish whenever the opportunity is available as well.

Can you get a decent amount of omega-3 from tuna?
That would be great, because tuna cheese melts are among my favorite subs.

I don't eat fish often but when I do it's usually just canned tuna.

Ah, thanks!  Yeah, I'd like to do that in the future, so thanks for the info.  Just can't right now.

Most tuna's you get in a can aren't really good for Omega-3s, for several reason:
Canned tuna can contain a wide variety of fish in, some with lots of omega-3s and some with not so many.
Most tunafish is cooked, then canned. The canning/cooking proccess itself drains away most of the oils in the fish and (as evidenced by Vector's fish oil pills), those oils are what contain the omega-3s. This bit isn't actually true of all fish, but IS true of all fish sold as tuna.

If you do want Omega-3s, you can specifically seek out raw tunafish suspended in oil instead of water, which avoids all that omega-3 loss, but regular canned tuna (especially the light kind) really won't cut it.

Been trying to steadily add more fish to the diet. We have a local fish merchant that I've really been meaning to use more -- they get all their stuff from the North Carolina coast, and they'll fillet it for you for no charge. When I do eat seafood, it's mostly been tilapia and salmon of late, although my favorites are shrimp and catfish. There is almost nothing in this world that compares to a perfectly fried catfish fillet with hot sauce on it.

One thing to bear in mind with fish is the mercury content. Fish accumulate mercury in their fatty tissue over time, enough so to be of medical concern to humans in some cases. The three main factors involved are:

1. Age. Obviously the older the fish, the more time it's had to build up mercury.
2. Fat content. Some fish have higher amounts of fatty tissue, which can increase the amount of mercury present.
3. Predation. Because all fish accumulate mercury to some degree, predation concentrates the mercury as you go further up the food chain.

So overall, the worst offenders are large predatory fish with long lifespans. Sharks, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish are generally considered the top of the "eat with caution" list.

Catfish, tuna, shrimp, pollock and tiny fish like anchovies and sardines are usually on the other end of the spectrum.

Oh, I misread, I read it as, "tiny fish like casfish, tuna, shrimp, pollock and anchovies and sardines are usually at the other end of the spectrum"

I eat Salmon with my rice whenever it's available. Being asian I have a ton of fish in my diet, but Salmon is by far the best ever.
