My militia captain lost his hand -- and consequently his ability to grasp -- to an elf, and now he wants to clean off all the blood. Unfortunately, he can't pick up the soap! He keeps running to the soap, dropping it on the ground, and then running a short distance before realising that it and doubling back to try and pick it up again. I've tried telling him to station in a pool of water, and I've even put a pool of water directly in his path, forcing him to clean himself; but he just won't give up on trying to pick up that soap! What can I do?

I was going to say that forbidding that particular bar of soap worked as a temporary solution, but I have to admit that this one seems like a better, more permanent one.

Lock him in a room. Bring him the services he needs through a lever opperated hatch.

Did he lose both hands, or just one?  If he's still got at least one working hand, it seems to me like that should be adequate to pick up a bar of soap and wash up.  Maybe report it as a bug in the Mantis bug tracker!

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE HANDICAP DWARVES SINCE I BEGAN PLAYING DWARF FORTRESS. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED NEURONS IN MOLECULAR THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY BRAIN. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH QUANTUM WAVE LENGTH OF EACH QUARK OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HANDICAP DWARVES AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT. HATE. HATE.

I think you shouldn't even bother getting him to clean himself, because even if you find a way that dwarf will need your manipulation of the environment to accomplish even the most menial of tasks. Such as trying to shove his sock into his cabinet, it's really an insult that he can't just use the edge of the drawer to catch his sock and put them in that way. I'd say it's best that you fling him off your tallest towers and call it a day.

It turns out that he lost one hand, and the other was severely crippled. Eventually his remaining hand healed up, and he was able to wash himself up and even pick up his old axe and charge into battle again!

He immediately got his windpipe crushed by a goblin lasher,and his body was laid to rest in the magma sea.

I had a axedwarf that had both his hands mangled up pretty bad. He couldn't do anything for the longest time eventually he was treated by the doctor and healed and now he's back to being a productive member of society. I am just saying don't be too hasty with the magma.
