basically, lots of ballistae are set up under a fortified pathway, goblins walk along pathway then ballista bolts hit them from below, and from both sides as well of course...

Actually, that's a very sound defence strategy. Except it's usually used in reverse - i.e. bowmen up above a narrow path. But bowmen under a narrow bridge is also rather interesting.  :)

I'm surprised nobody has thought of this. Conceal the entrance to your fortress with a waterfall. When somebody actually needs to go in or out, a switch can temporarily halt the flow of water while pumps below temporarily stop bringing it back up. Alternately, lava, with obsidian bridges everywhere.

the ultimate answer in dwarven housing: the Fractal-H highrise block: layer upom layer of fractal-Hs, with stairs joining in the middle. see fractal-H in Dwarf fortresss for what a fractal-H is (its a screenshot near the bottom of the page by me)

If I'm able and motivate, I'm going to try to make Xanadu, from CK. Then maybe make the dwarves try to match, have a king alone and isolated away from everybody else, lots of peasants (the "guests") loitering in some remote wing, just the fortress\royal guard, etc.

We'll see if I actually do though.
