The plan is to trap a dwarf in a one tile chamber then drop him into the magma sea.

Would it work?

Nope. If you don't drop the chamber with him, he'll get magma'd. If you do he'll get cave-in'd.

There's a megaproject where you build a shuttle of some kind out of rock, prep it with supplies, sensor and other assorted instruments, dwarf ir with some dwarven engineers and scientist (read: nobles) and drop it into the magma sea.

As of yet, there hasn't been any news from them, but that might be due to the exceptional amount of FUN they're having down there.

There was a thread a while ago where people discussed how to build dwarven dropships for colonizing the Magma sea... I'll see if I can find the link...

Ah, Here it is.

There are...problems with this.
You have to carve it out of natural rock-constructed walls and floors crumble. Even cast obsidian or somesuch will discover chunks of it destroyed or melted if it hits SMR.
If you have it closed-topped, it will likely squish your dwarves. If open-topped, magma displaced on top will drown and burn them.
I can't think of how to do it in DF.

Have pumps ready to catch the magma as it teleports up?

Make a submarine tall enough to keep out displaced magma?

All I can think of is to Piston drive into the magma sea, dig down beneath it, build a ceiling and cut it off from the top, at the level of the sea surface, then cave in the upper piece of the piston to destroy the top level.

Another problem with magma submarines: SMR eats cave-ins.

That won't work because liquids displaced by a cave-in teleport directly upwards.

There are a few problems with this:

terrain falls instantly. Dwarves do not. The terrain would fall through them killing them instantly while leaving them suspended in mid-air.

All open space under falling terrain will be collapsed. Supposedly this will not happen with stairs, so such a vessel would need to be a chamber of carved stairs.

Liquid is immediately displaced on top of the falling terrain--not sure if this applies with stairs as well.

Terrain that touches the molten rock floor of the magma sea instantly turns to magma. This would need to be done in a cistern.

Unless I've missed something, and assuming that a dwarf will not be crushed by falling stairs, assuming that water/magma does not displace into stairs like it would on top of solid terrain, and assuming you have some way of dropping a vessel one z-level at a time, it may still be possible to make a vessel of the form of a 3x3x3 up/down stairs encased in stone with dwarves stationed on the bottommost level, and drop this into fluid 1 z-level at a time.

Man, what is IN that magma sea that makes people wanna go down there so bad? What does "SMR" stand for, for the matter?

SMR stands for semi molten rock. It's a type of stone that is infact condensend magma, and anything touching it turns into magma.
Why do people want to go in the magmasea? Because unlike the humans who tame the normal sea, dwarves wish to tame the magma sea and travel it's adamantine filled dephts. Also !magma crab biscuit!.

You could probably get in if you can find a wide ore vein to land it on. I suggest the Piston, because then you're not worrying about the drop of the dwarf, just the landing of the piston. Then you carve inside to get in.

We need to find a way to make this the most elaborate execution method ever.
