Wood weapons or unarmed?
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:01:41 am »

Let's assume I have a hypothetical fort without any metal. I have a severe shortage of armor, and more importantly, weapons. Would elven wooden weapons be better than fighting unarmed?

Wood crossbows and piles and piles of wood/bone bolts.

Then you can "acquire" iron from the goblins.

Place wooden cages outfront, capture goblins, smelt goblinite, make bronze/iron swords.

Engage war with humans. Rebuild traps. Capture humans. Smelt humanite.

Engage war with elves. Carve elf bones.

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Yes, but don't expect it to block an iron arrow. It will keep the dings and scratches off your dwarves though.

Yeah if you don't have metal your best bet really is some marksdwarves in leather firing bones nonstop as well as some traps - don't expect the bone bolts to do much though 95% will do absolutely nothing against armored foe.

Your arrows should block out the sun, otherwise you're not shooting enough.

The goblins, however, enjoy fighting in shadow.

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Yes, the elven weapons will be much better.

Even better, using wooden weapons will increase skill in that weapon category so that once you have metal to use you already have somewhat skilled dwarves to use them.

Semirelated, is there an appreciable difference between a wooden elf weapon and a dwarven wood training weapon? I'm going to assign the less lethal weapons to the FG for use during times of peace.

Training weapons are blunt. Elven wooden weapons have edges (albeit crappy ones).
