Zinc totally unavailable?
« on: March 30, 2011, 10:05:09 am »

I have no Sphalerite in my embark, and I've got a pushy noble who wants nothing but items made from Zinc.

I thought my dwarf civ would save me, but they....have no zinc either. No zinc bars, no zinc blocks, no items made from zinc that I can melt down. I know the hurr-durr answer is "kill your noble" but that's a stupid solution to what should be an easy problem to fix. Where's the Zinc at?

None of the sites of your civ has Zinc in them and your fort doesn't have access to it either. If the humans don't have any either, you cannot make Zinc items ever. Mind, nobles don't understand such a basic concept - they have been known to mandate Slade items before which is HARDCODED to be impossible to make into items. There's very good reason everyone kills off unreasonable nobles, especially if they've had 40d experience.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I thought mandating adamantine in their first year was bad. That's just broken.

My civ has every single metal available....except Zinc.

Ignore the mandate. It'll go away eventually. Or your noble will go away...

If said noble is the mayor you can replace him without slaughter.

No, somehow controlling my pop cap, I ended up with a Barony at 37 dwarves and no mayor. And I know I can ignore the mandate, I'm just not looking forward to two imprisonings/beatings a year.

You can also just fire the captain of the guard.

Just use an extremely weak captain of the guard who won't use weapons.  He'll just walk around and slap dwarves lightly for punishment.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Try trading for Zinc items from the humans, and melting it down

Beware, though. Its a 3:1 ratio, with 3 items burning down into one bar.  Do you REALLy love your noble that much? (I don't.)

Buy a metal from the dwarves with the same price as zinc. Then edit an existing reaction to convert it into the same quantity of zinc. It's kind of a cheat but not one to lose sleep over.
