Disappearing skeletal dragon?
« on: March 29, 2011, 11:09:03 pm »

I was questing to kill a skeletal dragon, and I did indeed get to the lair of the monstrosity. I stabbed it a few times with my spear, but for some reason it disappeared. I still had the task of killing it in my log, so I know I haven't killed it. I know for a fact that I'm in the right place, so I haven't accidentally killed a different dragon. Anyone got any suggestions as to what happened and how to complete the quest?

Edit: I noticed on the announcement page that it said "Skeletal Dragon has vanished." What does this mean?

This is something that happens periodically to undead now; sometimes they will vanish rather than being destroyed.  Not sure if that means they can return somewhere else later, wreaking more havoc, or if they just cease to exist and buggily do not give you credit.

Either way, you cannot finish the quest.

Sad face. I guess I'll just have an extra quest to kill a dragon that doesn't exist now.

Well, it doesn't seem to matter anyways, as it counted as a kill apparently. I turned it in like a normal finished quest, so its fine.

Undead creatures always vanish when killed and re-appear some time later.

Yeah I got sent to kill a zombie dragon once. The first time, I travelled to its lair and cut off something off of it which caused it to dissapear. Same thing as you, zombie dragon has vanished, and then you turn in the quest.

But if you check legends mode, it doesn't show the dragon as dead, it merely says "on the date so and so, zombie dragon vanished in the slithery hills" or whatever.

Then I started a fort in that same world, and the zombie dragon arrived as a megabeast event after a few years. I abandoned and visited the fort with the original adventurer. I had read somewhere that undead had a hit point system, so they would eventually break down and die instead of dissapearing, so I limited myself to stabbing attacks so I wouldn't cut off anything. After about thirty minutes of just spamming hundreds of stabs without the dragon doing anything (zombies are no danger in DF), I just gave up, used one slashing attack, and cut off its head. Dissapeared again.

I guess the hitpoint system doesn't work, or a zombie dragon has such massive HP that hundreds of attacks from a legendary swordswarf using adamantine are not enough.
