it is only because the magma piston wasn't finished. The year ended before I could collapse the first stage sealing us off again from the cave.

I labeled all my levers for ease of use. Hopefully the other three still work. Be carefull with the once on the farm level though.

Yeah I've labelled mine too. The only one I expect to need in the near future is 'seal the lower levels' in the event we get a FB. I'm fairly sure the military can cope with a goblin incursion, but I intend to bolster defences around our front gate before looking to the caverns..

Summer

1st Hematite

Right, the summer begins!

I'm tying the Rhino up in the main entrance hall :D

4th Hematite

I have decided to seal the lower levels of the fort so I can concentrate on improving our upper floors and above ground facilities :]

Later that day...

IN THE NAME OF ARMOK WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING ON THE LOWER LEVELS...



Alaric and a few other dwarves are apparently sleeping in the lower levels, and a giant olm has come to play.

I'll deploy the military in a bid to save him!

5th Hematite

The military are on their way, the olm is jumping around that corridor and has yet to notice the sleeping Alaric...

Meanwhile at the gate...



A cat has discovered a goblin snatcher!

Stupid Olm moving the military the one time a goblin appears...

6th Hematite

Noooooo! Two dwarves, dead. One diving down a hole to avoid an attack, the other from lung damage :(

Some dizziness is being seen in the men too, looks like we need a hospital!

Update:

Apparently, in my haste to defeat the Olm, I allowed the military down their with only training weapons! So the military are standing thier battering the unconcious Olm for all their worth. good training at least...

15th Hematite

After that disaster I have finally managed to seal everyone in the upper part of the fortress. The military are back to training and the Olm is off to the butchers, finally dead.

The Hospital is carved out and awaiting furniture now :]

I am also carving out a crypt for our fallen brothers...

1st Malachite

Not much has been going on until today.

Work proceeds well on my little plateau project, the hospital and first level of the crypt are nearly complete.

A new menace has befallen us:



Bloody mountain gnomes!

They even punched the rhino!



hehehehehe!!

Got our hall all bloody though :/

3rd Malachite

It seems we have a mayor!

He's mandated the construction of 3 trumpets! How odd!

Better get started on his quarters :D

15th Malachite

Pretty uneventful times. Orders are on for the finishing touch of my plateau project, and items for the mayors quarters :]

Hospital is done though!



24th Malachite

Culled a few kittens.

16th Galena

Well it's been a fairly quiet summer since the Olm incident.

Human traders have arrived on the map, so hopefully we'll be able to acquire some useful goods.

And the mayor's quarters are finally finished :D



18th Galena

I have began work on improving the outer defences.

Autumn has come...

Not much happened in the last few days of Summer..

except I finished this:

Autumn

So yes... my tower is complete. Not that much of a tower really, it's only a few Z-levels tall. It has two functions:

The first and main function is: Beekeeping :D each floor has two (soon to be three) hives on it, allowing for honey galore!

The second function is that there is an awfully pleasant statue garden at the top!

Now thats done, I will be focusing on brining our front gate defences up to scratch!

4th Limestone

The mayor is complaining that his quarters aren't good enough so I've instructed for some limited engraving to be done.

Broker is still on a break, so trading with the humans has yet to commence...

7th Limestone

Finally traded with humans. Acquired all their food (yummy cheese) and wood, as well as a few other useful things.

20th Limestone

Very little going on. Just continuing improvements to gateway. Ordered numerous large pots to store food in...

25th Limestone

Fortifications above the gate are now complete.

6th Sandstone

I have sceduled at least one crossbowdwarf to guard above the gate.

Still not much going on...

11th Sandstone

Began construction of secured entryway to fortress...

21st Sandstone

Defences around entry dug out. Trap parts ordered.

25th Sandstone

Things just got interesting



Oh hell

Gremlins :s

That lever... is labelled... piston support >.<

... *unpauses* ...

Nothing happened :D

Ahh good times.

Though who knows what havok they could cause if they got into the upper levels...

6th Timber

Things are still very quiet. I expect there's at least one ambush skulking about out there, but who knows :s

ARR they're hitting dwarves on the plataeu :(

I'll have to organise a burrow.

17th Timber

The dwarven caravan has arrived. Hopefully their guards will assist us!

The goblins are running for them...

20th Timber

The goblins begin their assault on the caravan



21st Timber

Victory! I'll open the gates :]



26th Timber

Outpost Liason arrived. Ordered various things, drink, weapons, better quality bolts etc.

27th Timber

Another baby born.

Winter

So things are ticking over fairly peacefully thus far :]

3rd Moonstone

Time to trade with the dwarves then! Bought the four steel bars they had with them, as well as all their wood. As you can never have too much :p

They brought no booze which is vexing! Got some shiny siver bolts, a few steel anvils, some meat and some cheese.

Was not a brilliant haul, but we're doing ok on our own at the moment...

5th Moonstone

The emergency defences around the gate are coming along well :] I'm fairly confident that goblins could be fed into them as a last resort and the fort would survive...

18th Moonstone

Well the traders have left...

Things are very quiet. Maybe I just got the calm year?

20th Moonstone

A girl is born...

So many children!

27th Moonstone

I only just noticed this!



Our mayor in his infinite wisdom has banned exporting socks

Still very little occuring. Defences around entrance are complete, if nudimentary.

Gratifyingly, on the final few days of my time presiding here. The first honey has been produced :D

To the next overseer, I recommend the rather dangerous job of reclaiming the lower levels and ultimately getting some magma is done quite soon. There is limited direction to go in without metals...
