I prefer 40d. I once got FALCAWN PAWUNCHED by an elf in 40d.

aiming? bah a 40d Warrior needs no such thing when you can send your foes in to the sky.
that and organ blending spears.

still it was nice to find a quest some times.

40d is currently slightly more stable than the the latest release, which would be my only reason for picking it. Not for long, though, at the rate Toady is wading through these bugs. I think the new features are really too big a positive to give up for a slightly more stable a release, though.

Current version. Aimed combat makes the game more strategic rather then just hitting the direction keys again and again.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

I got into this game by watching some guy named Jeff do a lets play on youtube of adventure mode. I think it was 40d, don't know. That dude was going around massacring elven villages, raiding goblin towers to strangle goblin children with their own loincloths, visiting and getting lost in dwarven mountain homes. It was funny when he was able to gather up a group of henchmen that happened to all be related to each other in some way. I don't see any of that in the current adventure mode. Everyone has no family to speak off and civilizations besides humans don't exist. :-\

Adventure mode in the current version was actually quite good way back in ~.18, when adventure reactions were in but sprawl was not, and placeholder mountainhomes and forest retreats still existed. There's also something to be said for the infinite flow of reinforcements/enemies to murder in castles in the current version.

the current version just seems bland to me, 40d was just more exciting in my opinion, only thing i dont like in 40d is that it take ages to find someone who will give you a quest.

Both 40d and 31.x Adventure modes are sandboxes for messing around in at the moment, and for that I prefer 31.x's combat system over the more complete world of 40d. Hopefully it shouldn't be long before Dwarf, Elf and Goblin settlements come back anyway.

You have the version number wrong.  31.12 was the last version that didn't have sprawl, but it didn't have aimed attacks either.  I'm going to stick with 31.18, which has aimed attacks, until Toady finishes the caravan arc.

Does anybody know if the current version will eventually become like 40d? You know, being able to strangle with objects again, taverns, towns, dwarfs with proper cities...

No, it wont become like 40d. It will eventually become much better. Better towns and dwarven cities and everything should all come within the next few months (or years if we're unlucky). It's all planned but will take some time.

As dwarves slowly lose their stats over time it's natural for them to get fatter as they age because there's no activities to train healing rate.
so dwarves that die of old age in DF dont get shriveled and weak, but huge round masses of meat and fat that explode spectacularly upon their final birthday?

Check up the to-do list on the main DF page for a detailed look at planned features.
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html
By the looks of things, we should be seeing a return to the level of detail we were at in 40d within 3-4 biggish releases. Assuming Toady doesn't decide to work on some different features in between the Caravan Arc releases.

Although I haven't tested it, I highly, highly, HIGHLY doubt it. A LOT of stuff has changed since 40d.
