Pet armor
« on: March 29, 2011, 12:57:19 am »

I'd like to make an animal that wears armor - it should be able to wear wood/stone/bone/metal versions of a specific armor that the dwarves make for it, and ideally also have wild populations that come with a stone or possibly wood version of the same item.

How would I go about doing that? It seems like I have to make the animal small, so that it doesn't wear regular dwarven armor, which is perfectly fine, but then how do I get dwarves to make small armor? And is giving the creature the [equips] tag and leaving the armor in its pen sufficient to get it to wear it?

This is not currently possible I'm afraid.

You cannot make armour that will be worn by animals.
You cannot make armour of specific sizes.
You cannot get a pet to equip armour in any circumstances.

The best you can do is potentially mod the animals so they have natural armour that is a part of their body.

Okay, thanks. Back to the drawing board on that one, then.

Nice concept though. Don't get demotivated now.

Can animals be used in reactions yet? If so you could always forge armoured pets from pets and armour.

Let me get this straight. So a Armadillo un-armored would be a, Dillo?

I don't /think/ so, but I may be wrong. Vermin might be able to be.

No worries on that count. I've decided that dwarves shouldn't keep aboveground livestock, and I'm working on a small mod to replace them. I already have four critters made, but then I discovered that the guard spider I made is useless against swarms (10 cats can take one out with less than 50% casualties in the arena, though it can reliably down a basic troll and has a good chance against a well-skilled armed one), so this was a late addition to the set to fill that gap. I wasn't too attached to the idea, though it is pretty cool.

How about you release a small mod then?
People could give you great advice and help if there are any problems with it. Share share share!

I'm totally going to release it! I just wanted to get to the point where there was something to release, first. And I need to look at how other minor mods specify changes to the entity_default file and things of that nature - one of my critters requires both a new reaction and a slight edit of an existing one.

Also, balance issues. I haven't *played* with that spider yet, so it might be useless in practice for all I know. Though I guess that's what feedback is for. :)

Exactly, feedback is importantly related to progress.
I'm curious about your little tarantula then.

Venomous daddy long legs, actually. Notable: It doesn't shoot webs, and dwarves aren't immune to its poison. Be thoughtful in how you pasture/store this guy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'mma go set up a thread for the whole mod, now.

Truth spider, cute!
Does it include truth serum as venom?
