That's because it's a corpse outside. If you want it to be butchered you can either make a one-space refuse stockpile under it, or just turn on "Dwarves gather refuse from outside", which will make them not only gather things your hunter kills but any body part, vermin your cats kill, goblins, etc that litter the outside. But it's easy.

Does he occasionally bring back "kills" or does he wander around slaughtering everything? If it is the first, that's due to the behaviour of hunters; they focus on trying to get one animal back. Any others they encounter on the way to that target are taken out and left for dead.

Yeah, they're like the military in this one aspect. They will accept a target (military accept a station point), and will try to get to it, but will deviate to kill anything they encounter that's tagged as wildlife.

Speaking of which. Undead wildlife is extremely annoying. I guess that's the point of it, but hunters could actually try and kill them.

I have always used hunters and they are still not working like they did in 33g.  I have not made a fort in 38c yet so it may be one of the unnamed bugs toady mentioned being fixed.  What happens is the hunter will run out and follow a mountain goat(or whatever) around until he finally shoots it enough to kill it, then instead of returning the kill (which they have always done before) he just goes across the map to kill something else.  I have a refuse pile before you ask that.  It's not the case where the hunter is killing a whole herd of something and then bringing them back, he will literally run around and kill every animal on the map and then have 'no job'

EDIT: spelling

I've had hunters return kills in 38c, but it isn't consistent. It seems that if there is another creature nearby they will chase it instead of returning their kill. The corpse is always retrieved by another dwarf, though because I have outdoor refuse hauling on.

we're talking about 38b having the bug.....not 33.  33g is the last time it worked right for me.  Thank you for reading all the posts before posting....
