A properly functional religion needs to focus on two simple things, that after death the follower will be happy and with family, and that the deity that created everything in some way or another loves you for you but would rather you be good rather then evil.

So a religion cannot be "properly functional" without (a) an afterlife with identity and relationships intact and (b) an affectionate personal deity.  Good to know.

All modern religions are stupidly unfocused or focused on irrelivant things like this.
What does this even mean

No. Just No.
Everything else is additional baggage that religion doesnt really need, and just causes problems with disagreements.
Who are you to say that all of religion outside of a loving God and an Afterlife with your family is unneeded?

Huh. Now for the spanner in the works: Religions featuring an afterlife are responsible for some pollution. I'll let you figure out how.  ;D

Cremation? If we had no notion of an afterlife we would probably just leave corpses lying around.

Is this one of those "people who believe in an afterlife don't care how they treat the material world" things, or is this something else? I need to know which cliche I'm being told is clever.

What does this even mean
Does religion need to be telling you you cant draw pictures of people? or to punish those that do so?
No. Just No.
What you'd rather that religion doesnt tell you everythings going to be fine after you die? or your deity hates you for what you do or who you are?
Who are you to say that all of religion outside of a loving God and an Afterlife with your family is unneeded?
Somebody who dont like what religion means.
Try and find one thing besides those that any religion does that doesnt cause problems with other religions, even punishment of "evil" can be taken as a religious unnessesary that caused wars killing and the lot.   Anything else should really be left for government to handle, not for religion to lump up with beliefs.

I think he's calling burial pollution.  But I'm not sure.

Huh. I'd never considered burial being pollution. I intend to be dissolved in acid and then poured on a Scientologist.  :P

Dig deeper. A religion need not even involve a deity, or an afterlife, and the concepts of "deity" and "afterlife" vary startlingly between religions to begin with.

I was hoping to resist the urge to let myself be drawn into this, but... no, religion does not explicitly mean "happy afterlife and loving god," nor does it mean "anything not relevant to a happy afterlife and loving god are incidental and not part of what the religion is about."

Going to step back out before this inevitably descends into a minefield.

Then again, a bay12 minefield is still more civilised then some forums normal conversations, so it's not like you have a lot to worry about. Really, what are the chances of a zealot being offended because you eat meat around Easter time, and spamming the forums for it? Doesn't happen often. Your much more likely to be told, in great depth, how you are wrong, and that you should shut up, and should you take the advice all will be better off for it.

I never stated that religion needs an afterlife, just an explaination that after death your not just going to be dead and thats that. and deity is the only word that functions as both "higher power" and "greater being" and amount doesnt really matter as long as it explains that the earth and everything was made by such and such and stuff...

Why the hell am I argueing about religion again? You can keep your bloated religions, I dont care.
