Hammer dwarf doesn't start with hammer?!
« on: October 15, 2006, 08:21:00 pm »

I just started a new fortress in a 'Terrifying' location, and decided to bring along a Professional Hammer Dwarf being 'Skilled' in the use of Armors and Shields.

1. The Dwarf didn't start "Activated" for military; he was a peasant on the start of the map.

2. The dwarf only had a shirt, pants, and shoes. No armor and weapons were given to him relating to his military profession, or on him at the start of the map -- A hunter /trapper is given a crossbow and chain armor.

3. No items relating to the hammer dwarf are in the wagons, or on the ground; however, i did somehow manage to obtain a crossbow, iron bolts, and chain leggings. This is likely because i assigned a dwarf to be an animal dissector; he was then given hunter status, and equipment.

Needless to say, it's completely FUBAR, and if i hadn't given my carpenter/wood cutter a 'Axedwarf' level of skill, i would be completely defenseless. (Crossbow with no skill = useless!)

Personally I think the FUBAR part is the hunter starting with anything lol... I mean if you have to buy the miners picks and the woodcutters axes then why not the hammerdwarfs hammer and the hunters crossbow? They ARE on the list of things to buy before setting out... However an nice increase in the starting points would be needed to balance that I think (either that or give miner/woodcutter their tools free too) either works for me  ;)

Yeah, starting points as a sort of difficulty level could work. The overall wealth of the specific dwarven parent civilization could be used to determine starting points. (Though there are only two dwarf civs on any world atm, so it could wealth of a specific dwarf city)

Of course, as you progress in dwarf mode, differences in starting configuration eventually disappear anyway, so its not a long-term difficulty level.
