Here's what I was thinking about- I have a guard tower, does it matter if the Fortification is hanging off the tower (i.e. no floor or wall beneath it) or if it's set ON the tower where it has a wall/floor beneath it? If I have the Fortifications hanging off the edges does that mean there's a gap underneath the Fortification?

That doesn't matter, but the dwarf cannot shoot downwards so any goblins right next to the wall will be completely safe.

If I build a floor grate, will the dwarf then be able to shoot downward?

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

IIRC, no.

Problem with magma curtains is that it tends to be murder on your FPS due to all of the pumps running on a continual basis.
