If you have file options set to show extentions, you can make a new txt file from the right click menu then rename it to .bat

Gotcha. Done, but the same thing happens. Map data not yet available. Should I shut down DF and restart it, see if it picks it up?

EDIT: Still no.

I'd just mine out a tile or two on each side of the river bank. You can see an example here in this image from my fort: http://mkv25.net/dfma/viewmap.php?view_poiid=318

That shows the river, the dug out banks next to it, and my tower-cap farms (left of the river) and regular farm rooms (right of the river - not wet or planted in this image, since it's from winter).

So digging in a ways might help it pick the map up?

I'm just looking to build a nice-looking fort for a change, rather than a functional one, so I want to use reveal and granite to plan things out in advance.

An alternative is to abandon the Fortress and then reclaim it. I've found this reveals the each feature you had found entirely. I just dug straight through to the magma so I could abandon and reclaim to know where they all go.
